degenerate meathead frat boy at a state U that lets in anyone with a pulse != nerd frat at an Ivy |

They moved beyond being a service institution and into partying and hazing. They shouldn't have a place on any college campus for parties. Any organization that wants to be greek should not have housing and should only be allowed to do charitable work during daylight hours. Alcohol free.
|
| Greeks are here to stay. Many parents and kids place the importance of a top house bid over grades. |
|
They should serve only cake, ice cream and Capri Sun at college parties....
Tell you what. You go right ahead and throw that cake and ice cream party. See how many students come to it. |
Many of the Greek houses require minimum GPAs to stay in the fraternity. If you don't keep your grades up, you get kicked out. They support each other through school, tutor each other and make friendships that last a lifetime. They are not all involved in crazy hazing rituals. They do have parties but that does not mean that they aren't serious students, too. Not all frats are Animal House. |
| All the bogus service work is just to deflect from the hazing, binge drinking, narcotics, and preying on underage co-eds. |
Herein lies the problem in American culture. A few weeks ago around homecoming time, My 17 year old was recently explaining that kids only want to go to parties at the houses of kids with parents who allow drinking because without alcohol...they're bored. Has the Information Age screwed our youth so badly that nothing other than substance abuse is considered fun? |
Actually, binge drinking is far more common among Greeks then among people who are not affiliated. There are data on this point. https://www.addictioncenter.com/college/drinking-drug-abuse-greek-life/ |
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. |
This was true 30 years ago too...and 100 years ago...and 500 years ago... |
Exactly |
Yup. I think fraternities definitely attract that type. The "popular" guys that come from well-off families that plan to major in some combination of economics/business/political science and have some high profile job, often achieved through connections. You're find plenty of this type at any university. |
I am hoping the increased use of ever more legal pot will make your cake party sound like a good idea before my DC gets to college. It’s rare that a rapist is high, too. |
Yeah, HS kids are kids. They have no business going to or hosting drinking parties. And actually there are plenty of HS parties that are not drinking parties. Most are parent supervised, too. And most of the people that I know would not allow their HS student to attend a drinking party. In this thread we are talking about young adults who have graduated from HS and are no longer under direct adult supervision. Specifically we are talking about young adults who are in college and belong to or attend parties thrown by a fraternity. Most of these parties do, in fact, involve alcohol. High Schools do not have fraternities that I'm aware of..... |
eh, pot stinks and it makes people paranoid. I hope my kids don't go near the stuff even if it is legal in some areas. |
