Pregnant but OHSS is gone

Anonymous
After my last medicated IUI I developed mild OHSS (severe bloating, abdominal pain, hurt to walk) for about a week. I've done a beta test yesterday and have good numbers, but I realised this morning that OHSS symptoms are completely gone. I have been told that OHSS should persist throughout the first couple of weeks of pregnancy. I'm doing another beta tomorrow to see of HCG levels are going up, but I'm so worried the first result was a fluke because OHSS is gone.

Has anyone experienced this - pregnant but no more OHSS?

How would your OHSS influence your beta numbers? I’m also convinced that physical symptoms are so singular and unreliable as indicators of the health of your pregnancy. I’ve been pregnant (with results ending in healthy kids) twice and both times through IVF. At no point in my first trimester did my physical symptoms resemble what I was told to expect - no nausea, only internittent breast soreness, etc.

I’m not sure how you had OHSS? Isn’t this caused my multiple eggs/folicles? With IUI you don’t have that. I wouldn’t worryZ

I had a medicated IUI so used all the same hormones you would with IVF and had multiple follicles develop as a result.

No, I must have put this wrongly. I'm not implying my OHSS would influence the beta numbers - I meant that the numbers were okay (a little low) for where I am, but I'm worried it's leftover from the hormone shots I received, because the OHSS symptoms are completely gone, and I read that OHSS should only get worse if I'm actually pregnant. I had another beta done today so I just have to wait and see what the numbers are now. It's just really frustrating not to know.

I have to agree with you, judging individual symptoms is a fool's errand. This is my third pregnancy (previous two ended in miscarriages) and each time it was something different. The last pregnancy was also achieved through a medicated IUI and I had no OHSS, though the hormone dose I received last time was actually higher.

they don't do IUI if you have more than 2-3 follicles. That is NOT OHSS. That would be if you had 25+ follicles. Yes, meds are the same as in IVF but the doses are many times lower.

I guess my RE was wrong with her diagnosis... because someone on an anonymous forum thinks you can't get OHSS after an IUI? I'll be sure to pass that along. With a medicated IUI you receive supplementary HCG doses AFTER the IUI, which can trigger OHSS. Which is what happened to me. Thanks for your helpful answer to my question though!

Do you know what OHSS stands for? How could your ovaries be hyper stimulated from 2-3 follicles? It doesn't make any sense.

NP here. Yea, you lost me on this one, OP. The only medication after the IUI for me was the progesterone suppositories. No HGC beyond the trigger shot.

I know they sometimes give patients an extra hcg shot after retrieval if they are planning on doing a fresh transfer, but I've also never heard if it after an IUI.

Agreed. I've never heard of an IUI protocol with HCG.

OP here. Well, in my clinic with a medicated IUI you receive HCG shots on day 3, 6, 9 and 12 after the 2nd IUI. I also take estrogen, progesterone, a blood thinner and something for the endometrium something... I have no medical qualifications so I tend to trust what my doctor (at a very well respected clinic in my city) says. I developed OHSS after the shot on day 6 so was told to stop the shots.

Anyways, to anyone actually looking for an answer to my original question, yes, you can actually be pregnant and have OHSS recede. OHSS did not come back, but I'm 6 weeks, woot woot.

those are not hcg shots. you are mixing something up.

They are. I used Pregnil after the IUI, which is hCG. If you google, you can find articles supporting this approach. Here, for example: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2838901/

One of my previous pregnancies was achieved with the same protocol, so it clearly works.
