I have 50lbs to lose and am uncomfortable at the gym and in fitness classes b/c everyone is already in shape. Where can I start where I will be comfortable or what can I start with at home?

I am in McLean.

I'm starting with watching what I eat and walking in my neighbourhood. Take it 10 lbs at a time.

This. I have a 70 pound goal. I've lost 35. I started by walking and recording all calories in My Fitness Pal. My goals were two-pronged. I wanted to lose a pound or 2 a week. And I wanted to get to the next 0 on the scale. 190 or 180, etc. That was much easier to face for me than the 70 pounds in their entirety.

As I got into walking, I began upping the fitness goals. More time, more strenuous, things I had never tried before like hiking in the woods, hiking up Sugarloaf mountain, hiking the Billy Goat Trail, hiking on the Appalachian Trail. I found that I really enjoy it.

They say even a 10% weight loss really boosts health. You could look at it that way, too. Go for that first 5 pounds. Go for the next 5. And so on.

Me again.
I'm also treating myself for every 10 lbs I lose.
Something like facials, laser hair removal etc.

I'd just start in the kitchen and with walking. The exercise will make you feel good, but the weight loss comes from the kitchen.

I'm doing Weight Watchers and write down everything I eat. I keep the scale on the kitchen counter, and use it to weigh food. Measuring cups/spoons are within reach. Having a fridge stocked with my favorite fruits & vegetables is key.

30 minutes of brisk walking. I've lost 8 pounds in the last 6 weeks, and would like a total of 30 lbs. When I get down another 10, I'll add in more rigorous exercise. I know that when I work out more, my appetite increases. It's most important that I get the eating under control in terms of portions and choices. Personally I like WW because there is no "off-limits" food. I can have anything I want. Just have to count it and fit it in with my points.

OP, I go to the gym. I am what you'd probably describe as fit and "in shape." But I also lost 60 lbs.

If it helps, imagine everyone you see as formerly fat. Many of us at the gym certainly are. We don't judge you - we support you, and completely and totally understand where you're coming from.

But if you're still timid about the gym, how about taking things outside? Walking, hiking, maybe even running with a program like Couch to 5k? It's a perfect time of year to spend time outside!

What gym do you go to where everyone is in shape??
I think you're being too hard on yourself...

+1. Do you have a diet plan OP? That is the most important part. You are not going to lose 50 lbs through exercise. Go to a nutritionist.

What exercise are you doing now? If it is none, that's all the more reason to start with walking. More chance you will stick with it and less chance you will hurt yourself. Or, get an exercise bike and do it at home.

After you have lost 10-15 pounds and are doing some exercise regularly, then think about the gym.

PP again. Or, in addition to walking do the 7 minute work out. There are apps. (google it). Obviously, you are not going to lose weight from a 7 minute work out, but its a great way to start slowly building muscle and stamina and improving your heart rate.

PP one more time. You can do it! Good luck.

You lose weight in the kitchen, you get fit in the gym. Start with changing your diet/portions and just walking.

Diet. Limit or cut your carbs. I think keto works wonders for those looking to lose 20+.

In any case, figure out your maintenance calories and eat 20% below that.

Weigh your food and track via any number of free online tracking programs.

Personally, I’m an advocate of lifting weights for all-around health and looking good.

But the diet is what will help you lose.

Do a search on here for Dr. Anchors. He can give you the jump start to lose the weight & establish new habits.

Focus on plant-based nutrient dense and that will change a lot.

I'm like you - feel self conscious in the gym. I can get my heat rate up with Walk off the Pounds DVDs at home (listening to my own music). It's great for a parent who wants to exercise and kids are asleep or something.
