Husband doesn't say good-bye - this is weird, right?

Anonymous
Hangs up the phone without saying goodbye, sometimes I have to call back because he didn't realize I had something else to say. Leaves rooms without saying anything, but the worst is that he will leave the house to run errands without saying anything! He'll say - I told you this morning I needed to go to target. Ok, but you didn't tell me when you were walking out the door! He is always going someplace I want him to go (I hate running errands) but I don't figure out he left until I try to find him and the car is gone. So irritating! This time my purse was in the car he took so I had no way to pay the guy who was repairing something at the house, so it was a real inconvenience, but even without that, I think it's so rude.

Yea, that would piss me off. Does he think that's normal?

Likely a result of his upbringing. Are you just noticing now? Did he used to say goodbye on the phone? Maybe it's time you sat him down and had a conversation about this bothering you and ask him if he could work on changing it.

Otherwise, start hiding his keys so he needs to find you to leave.

It's not new and it's always bugged me. I've told him and he'll do better for a while, often joking about it by doing this elaborate routine -I'm leaving this room and going to the other room, ok. Then he'll slowly fall back into his usual ways. It's clear to me that this is his norm and he has to be consciously focusing to remember the good-bye. It's as if he's mentally already moving off to the next thing so just goes and does it. So I'm used to it as being a mild irritant but got pissed off today because I didn't have the money to pay the guy.

Do his parents do this? Have you tried doing it to him and see if he notices?

I don't know about his mom, as she doesn't leave when we are there. Dad is deceased. I know he would not mind if I did it. But I always say good-bye and love you when I leave (who knows, something may happen and it's the last time I see you!). I'm glad to at least know it's not normal!

You want him to say something when he leaves the room?

I think you are probably as crazy about good byes as he is lacking.

If I say I am going to a target this am and my H is mowing the lawn I don't go out to talk him I just leave.

OP wants him to say something when he leaves the house, not the room. Most people let their spouse know when they are leaving the house.

So basically, this is who you chose to marry and now you want to change him?

I can't blame you for trying to change the habit b/c it would suck. However, you knew what you were getting into. Maybe try to deal with it with humor and that will be easier. "no sex for you tonight, you forgot my goodbye"

He has Aspergers right?

Not at all! Very social and outgoing, was voted class president 100 years ago in high school. Just very absent minded. And yes, pp was right that I married him despite this irritant so I don't really expect a change at this point, especially since I've seen him try and fail. Just wanted feedback that I'm not crazy! I kind of like the hiding his keys idea.

Not saying anything when leaving a room is no big deal. But the rest of it is strange.

Just weird and bad manners! Does he ever say please and thank you?

Why do you leave your purse in the car?

Weird.
