| It has been ranked as a "public ivy" and is in a beautiful location. My DC really wants to go to school in New England and is starting the process this year. UVM seems like a good option. |
Most expensive public school in US. That is why it is called public ivy |
Seriously? I don't think you have any idea of the genesis of the term public ivy. It's also very generous with merit aid which most state public's are not. $20k in merit is not uncommon for a strong student from the DC area. We visited and DC liked it. It's smaller than most state flagships which is something he was looking for and Burlington had a great vibe. It's also very strong in his proposed major. I wouldn't pay full freight (that's true of a lot of places), but I'd have no issue of the financial end worked out. |
I guess that's why UVa and W&M, which are more expensive out of state, are considered public Ivy's as well... https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/22/the-10-most-expensive-public-universities.html |
Good to hear about the merit aid. I love the size and location, and I think it would potentially be a good fit for my laid back kid if he ends up going OOS. He would need close to a maximum merit award for it to be doable. (Waiting for those first SAT scores to show up tomorrow!) |
My kid got a merit package of about $17k/year from Vermont, and it was still more expensive than any other public university where she was accepted, including other public ivies. She passed. |
| Very expensive, and very far away, and full of hippies and druggies. Have you visited? It's beautiful, but not impressive academically |
Hippies and druggies. It's a college. But why do you say not impressive academically? That's a pretty broad statement. |
|
UVM will likely not be cheap but certainly it won't come in at full sticker price either.
I think the trick with UVM is related to the strength of the intended department and the likelihood of a change in major during the process. If DC is interested in a particular strength of UVM but likely second and third choices are weak, that could be a deal breaker unless the intended major is locked in. If the intended major is average and that is okay in terms of the entire college search process, then a change wouldn't be a big deal. |
| UVM is a public (actually land grant) school but remember that Vermont is a very small state with a population of 500k or so. The university doesn't have a very large in-state base to draw from. On the one-hand that's what makes it more expensive but it is also why they are more generous with aid than many similar schools. |
| Does anyone have any insight into which departments/majors are considered particularly strong at UVM? |
|
I don't know the school well, but Burlington is a wonderful little city. If you haven't visited, it's worth the trip.
"Hippies" are all grown up now. "Druggies" are everywhere. |
Environmental sciences and natural resources are fairly strong. |
| it's in vermont |
They offer everything, but on an average level. They aren't particularly great at anything. |
