"On Thursday, he gave misleading answers to questions about seemingly small matters — sharpening doubts about his honesty about far more significant ones. He gave coy answers when pressed about what was clearly a sexual innuendo in his high-school yearbook. He insisted over and over that others Dr. Blasey named as attending the gathering had “said it didn’t happen,” when in fact at least two of them have said only that they don’t recall it — and one of them told a reporter that she believes Dr. Blasey."

A pattern of behavior, that's what we have now. Not fit for the job.

Vote is potentially at 1:30 for those who want to listen in. Lots of buzz in that room right now.

Does anyone else think that its possible Brett Kavanaugh simply cannot remember the incident because it had zero impact on his life at the time and because obviously, he was very drunk when it happened?

Jesus have you been reading any of the coverage over three days? Yes plenty of people believe this. It is the most likely scenario.

Yes, but in this scenario there would be no need for BK to lie about all the yearbook questions and preemptively discredit the only eyewitness of the attach. So, most likely, he remembers.

Did you watch his 30+ hours of testimony 2 weeks ago?
Yesterday he was there defending his reputation, his integrity and his livelihood. He was facing people who had called him “evil” and a “danger to all.” He was facing people who had proudly and publicly said, “I believe her” before hearing any testimony. He had every right to be angry. He had every right to show his fury at these ridiculous charges.
And, no, he could not adequately defend himself without showing his outrage. Had he done that, you folks would still say, “Look... he really is guilty. An innocent man would have more anger.”

Face it - NOTHING he did would please you.

This. So much this.

I honestly cannot believe some people think he should have somehow handled himself better. The man is being acused of sexual assault. I expect him to be angry and show it.

He is not presiding over a court case. He is defending his reputation.

+1,000
He had been very calm and soft spoken during his interview with Martha Macallum (sp?), but that was several days before the other outrageous claims came out. By yesterday, I imagine it was all he could do to speak coherently without breaking down. I had to listen on the radio since I was driving, but was in tears listening to the anger and pain in his voice, trying to hold it together. I can’t even imagine what it must be like to be accused of things you didn’t do, and having no way to clear your name.

The man was accused of horrible things that he flatly denies. I don’t know who’s telling the truth here, but those of you who believe Ford without reservation, may I ask why? Every witness she has named has refuted her claim. Yes, even Mark Judge who did so in writing, under penalty of perjury. No one has corroborated her account. Why is it that you have such certainty that he did it? I don’t get this utter glee some of you have about ruining this man’s life - with zero evidence.

Election betting odds now around 75% in favor of confirmation. The number does bounce around quite a bit.

What about his blatant partisanship and his opening statements that included conspiracy-theories regarding the Clintons and a commitment to take down his adversaries. So now we have a man with a partisan axe to grind on the SCOTUS?

He isn't worthy of the court. At any level.

Listening to these Senators wax on about their opposition to Kavanaugh, I might believe some of them in their outrage, until we consider how they voted on the Gorsuch nomination.....
With the exception of Booker and Harris, who were not on the committee, every single one of those currently on this committee also voted against Gorsuch.
Spare me your outrage.

Didn't Ford admit he was her boyfriend?

Very weird--the same Garrett person Whelan attempted to nail.

I think she actually specifically said not her boyfriend. She said that they "went out." I took that to mean that they went to movies together or dances together occasionally, maybe held hands or kissed but nothing particularly serious. But it did appear that he is the reason she knew Kavanaugh. He probably wasn't at the gathering, as she'd probably remember that, but I can totally see something like she runs into one of his friends at the club, and the friend says "Hey, Chrissy, a bunch of us are hanging out this afternoon at X's house...Squi's gonna come join. You wanna come over?" And she says "Sure!". Ad then she ends up leaving before Squi shows up. It's probably also why Leland doesn't really remember Kavanaugh....she went because C was going, and maybe she knew Squi or one of the other boys as well.

You're right, Dr. Ford did say that she and Squi had "gone out" together, which was the terminology people used at the time for dating. Having been young at that time myself, I can validate that Dr. Ford is correct that that is the phrasing we used at that time. We very rarely would refer to a couple as "dating," but instead would say, "Jennie and Bob are going out." "Dating" was a 1950s term, and we were much cooler and more modern than that.

Exactly. No matter what you think about he assault allegations he demonstrated extreme partisanship, belief in conspiracy theories and an unhinged demeanor that do not suit a SC Justice.

One of the many many reasons the hearing yesterday was such a disaster was the lost opportunity to actually do some fact-finding on this. Why did no one ask K where "Timmy's House" was? Why did no one ask K if it's really the case that he hadn't met CBF even though she was going out with his great friend Squi (who appears throughout his calendar)? Why did no one ask CBF how she usually got to CCC. How would she usually get home (when not detouring to a party). Possible that she just went back to CCC and got picked up by parent as usual? Why did no one ask K straight up if it was possible that others (including girls) were present at the July 1 gathering?
