1. By definition, any mass shooter is mentally ill.

2. The APA no longer considers trans identity as a mental disorder.

Part of the background check should look into mental health, perhaps a question about transitioning

Let's keep it simple. BAN assault weapons. Then move on to severely regulating the rest of these killing tools.

That won't work.

Assault weapons are just scary looking rifles.

Also sniper rifles are the same as hunting rifles.

It's a start. Chip away a little at a time. There's no other way.

Agree. Assault weapons ban is low hanging fruit since it was in place for 10 years and the world did not come to end. Life goes on just find without assault weapons polluting our country.

Manufacturers just designed around the ban during those years. Just as manufacturers designed around California's current ban. The compliant rifles remain just as deadly as any other rifle.

I don't care if one is pro gun or anti gun, its just stupid legislation that doesn't solve the problem one way or the other.

I can’t believe the excuses people are coming up with trying to argue about the shooter’s trans identity or the motive.

People care because there’s a culture war surrounding trans people right now.

It might relate to why the particular religious school was targeted. This is a possible hate crime/terror attack.

Well apparently he attended there at one point in his life. We won't know more until they release his manifesto.

+1 I’m not intimately familiar with hate crime laws, but it looks like this was personal against that particular school and the shooter wasn’t just targeting any Christian school because it was Christian. It will be interesting to see what the other target considered was - maybe the shooter’s high school?

+1 they can institute basically the same assault weapons ban that was in place prior to 2005 or whenever it expired and that’s easy enough to do without reinventing the wheel. Then go from there.

A) That’s not easy to do
B) 20 million AR-15s and similar rifles have been purchased since the AWB was lifted

With the current SCOTUS I don't see a ban holding up either, in light of prior NFA decisions regarding suitable for militia use by SCOTUS.

That's so cute. No they explode and pulverize the little children they are fired upon. All the others just kill them dead. Do you have children?

We failed our kids when we let the republicans and NRA repel the ban put in place after Reagan's assassination attempt.

Wow, that was incredible to watch.

Those sirens--those are something in the school? I've never heard ones like that before.

And the lady/employee who was outside and gave the keys to the officer--I feel like if I was in that situation I wouldn't have the presence of mind to grab the keys before evacuating the building...or maybe she keeps them on her at all times? She was much calmer than I would have been.

+1 on incredible to watch.

Truly heroic officers.

Why I will never express anything but respect and gratitude for LEO's generally.

So, Madame Gun Genius, only the US, unique among developed nations, has this problem. I guess it’s something inherent in us as a people that we’re all just uncontrollably violent. No way we can solve this with any laws. Nope. We just have to keep destroying families because we’re us.

PP here- Its relevant because its a possible (likely) motive for the shooting. A conservative school that likely didn't support this student in the way they thought they should be supported. In a state that is make life hell for trans people. It’s as relevant as any other motive, why bury it? I'm guessing you don't have an issue around reporting when a white supremicist shoots up a Black church? It’s just seems like disingenuious reporting by a serious new outlet.

why do you think the school was conservative? It is presbytarian...

Someone posted earlier that the school is PCA, not PCUSA. That’s the more conservative flavor of Presbyterian.
https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/tell-difference-presbyterian-denominations/?amp

Thank you for posting that. I've been very confused about it since I thought Presbyterians were just less formal Episcopalians. Didn't realize that there's an entire world of offshoot flavors.

Covenant school is a feeder school for Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA), also PCA associated. governor lees kids graduated from CPA. The same governor who is banning trans healthcare for minors, etc. really surprised this connection hasn’t been talked about. Any yes, the covenant families are likely republicans who support Lee and rep ogles.

Where did you find that information? I read somewhere that Bill Lee’s wife also taught at CPA but now I can’t find that info. Thank you.

He murdered the school principal and school pastor's kid. Police said it was targeted. News interviewed someone who speculates the custodian died trying to save people.

We need MUCH more gun control... Like advocating for repealing the 2nd amendment. That is the Only way to end in the middle. Us starting in the middle gets us know where.

The shooter could have done exactly the same thing with any other rifle, shotgun, or handgun. There is no feature on that rifle that increased lethality against unarmed students and staff.

She is right. The GOP uses these culture war splints as a cudgel to hide the true malfeasance in our society. Stop being distracted by the noise and the flooded zone of BS the GOP puts out there.

To be clear, handgun bullets do not have the same effect on the body and are far easier to survive than rifle bullets.

DP, that's not to say that handgun bullets are no big deal, but a handgun bullet to the stomach/chest won't necessarily kill you unless it's direct to the heart. Rifle bullets will kill you. Obviously anything to the brain will kill you.

There's also no reason anyone needs to be able to buy massive quantities of ammunition all of a sudden. There should be a max and anyone trying to go over that max should trigger an investigation.
