DS, 15, gained 13 pounds in two months!

Anonymous

Yikes! His weight has been steady for the past year, and he hasn't really been eating all that differently (I didn't think) but he gained 13 pounds from early July to September. He has been in the 85 percentiles for weight and height.

The one thing that is different is that all of a sudden, he started drinking milk. A lot of it.

Anyone have this happen? We have locked up all the snacks.

He is 6 foot now, and they predicted he be between 6-2 and 6-4.

A 15 year old boy isn't done growing. I think it's kind of nuts that you locked up the snacks -- you're setting him up for a bad relationship with food. He's probably eating all the junk food he can get his hands on outside of your house because you've made snacks forbidden.

Are you the smithsonian mom who flipped out over your kid eating a burger on his field trip a few years back?

Let the boy eat. A teenage boy who is already that tall is probably now to the point of growth where he is gaining muscles. Aw long as he is not parkee on his but playing video games all day, let the poor kid eat food and drink milk.

Unlock the pantry Mom.

I would not be even the tiniest bit alarmed by a 15 year old boy gaining 13 pounds in a cpuple of months.

And why are you monitoring his wi

I did the same thing on my first trip to Italy.

Unless he's obese or heading in that direction, count your blessings and feed him.

I am not that mom!

Someone asked about why I was monitoring his weight. I had to fill out health forms for summer camp, so I had him get on the scale. He was the same weight then as his last drs. appointment in October.

Then when school started and he went to put on his long pants, none of them fit in the waist (his summer shorts were all gym shorts). So I had him get back on the scale to check his weight. It's all around his weight, it looks like.

The main snack pantry is locked, but there's a snack cabinet that's filled up daily for him of a mix of treats and good stuff if he wants to peruse. We shop at Costco, so I just want to avoid him going through a case of Pringles.

You lock your pantry?!?!?

For real???

The snack pantry is literally locked?

If you don't want him to go through a case of Pringles, then don't buy a case of Pringles.

This is the kind of thing you track for a 15 MONTH old, not a 15 YEAR old!!! Why are you weighing him in every few months?

Uh, no thanks. That's not the point. We basically had a spare cabinet in the basement laundry room and put all the chips we buy, cookies, things like that, down there in the locked cabinet. He hasn't even noticed it yet. But if leaves the upstairs pantry with the healthier stuff, fruit on the counter, yogurt in the fridge etc.

Did you read my earlier post about needing to fill out the camp forms? And none of his pants fitting at the start of school?

OK, I can see storing extras from big Costco packages in the basement but WHY is the cabinet LOCKED? That is so weird.

Sounds like a normal growth spurt and a mom with a bad relationship with food and weight.
