Robert Pape on Offramp to avoid Stage 3 of the Escalation Trap. Pape has advised every president since W, including Trump 45. Pape also said he has talked to about 400 people in the past 30 days about this--Republicans, Democrats, economists, Nobel Prize winners, people in govt, etc, and he said that no one sees any alternatives.
What would a deal that Iran would find attractive? His 2 main points for Iran are: 1) Give up all oil sanctions 2) Militarily contain Israel somehow. Israel has to join the NPT. If Trump goes to Stage 3, Pape said that Trump is getting into LBJ territory and the next chance to even talk to the Iranians would then be after January 6, 2027, after the next Congress is seated. To what end? Like, maybe it will break through to the political class, but that's about it. The best the Democrats can do right now is record keep in some Excel spreadsheets and hope they get an AG and DOJ that has the ability to actually successfully prosecute a case within the statute of limitations. |
