Hogan's stated reason for mandating that schools start after Labor Day was to increase business on Maryland's shore by extending summer vacation.
Will there be any study or data to determine if it did in fact increase business revenue? At what profit point is it worth delaying school start dates? If it is found that the profits to businesses is negligible, will the mandate be revoked? |
| Probably not since it was so cold. The whole month was basically a bust. |
Not according to the Washington Post. Apparently, business was booming in OC this past week. |
| I went to the Eastern shore this Labor Day weekend and Labor Day weekend of last year. The traffic on the bay bridge seemed to be the same both years. |
How much more did businesses make this summer compared to previous summers? |

| So it was worth it? Yay Governor Hogan! |
| I wish DC would shift to after Labor Day! |
I wish FCPS would shift back again!! |

So our children will be stupider, but it's ok because an Armenian guy sold 42 more vulgar beach t shirts last week.
Great. |
I thought you guys were so called "progressives" ? What does it matter the nationality of the small business owner? Sad. |
It only takes one week for your kid to get stupider? Must be a case of the apple not falling far from the tree. |
Not everyone agrees with you. I've spoken to a lot of teachers who believe that even though it will be harder on the teachers, this is good for the students. Fewer 4 day weeks and 5 day weekends for random days off are better for learning. Having a bunch of extra holidays and professional days that create a lot of 4 days weeks is not great for the students learning. The new schedule forces school to cut back on the number of 4 day weeks in the calendar, especially in the Fall, which is good for the students. |
