MAJOR screw up with my PGS results

Anonymous
There was a HUGE screw up with my PGS testing results.

It's been two weeks since my clinic did my biopsy for PGS testing. I e-mailed my nurse and asked, based on when the biopsy was sent out, when I should expect to receive the results. She said I should expect to receive them either last Friday or today (Monday). I checked in last Friday - no word. I checked in today - they said they still hadn't received them. I thought that was odd, so I called the lab that does the PGS testing. The lab said they NEVER RECEIVED the biopsy from my clinic!

I thought there must be a misunderstanding, but she seemed pretty sure. So, of course, I called the clinic, and explained the situation, and asked to speak to my doctor or nurse ASAP. I was told they were both busy, but they would send a message to them both to call me back. I didn't hear from them. I e-mailed my nurse and another nurse, explaining the situation, and asking them to call me back and let me know what was going on. No response. After an hour and 15 minutes, I called back, and was told everyone was too busy to speak to me, but someone would look into it and get back to me. I demanded to speak to someone at that point because the office was going to close in 45 minutes and I wanted it handled TODAY. Seems reasonable, given that it was a major screw up on their part. Also, I'm on birth control and supposed to start the FET shots on Thursday, and order the meds by Wed at the latest (my insurance only covers mail-order meds). Finally, they connected me to someone. I asked if the biopsy had been sent out two weeks ago. She said NO. They realized they had never sent it out, so they just sent it out now.

They said I should receive the results in two weeks. They said they could put me on birth control until then. I said I'm already on birth control, and I need to find out the results before then because I need to start the meds for the FET on Thursday, or if there isn't a PGS normal embryo to transfer, then I need to start a new egg retrieval cycle at that time.

They hadn't even thought to check with the lab if they could expedite the results. I told them that the lab had said that it could turn around results overnight, and asked them to looking into expediting it.

Long story slightly shorter, after multiple calls to the clinic and the lab, they are going to expedite the results at their expense (only after I specifically requested this), and I'll get the results in two days, which gives me just enough time to order the meds to be delivered the following day, which is the day I start them - if there is a PGS normal embryo, which is, of course, uncertain. Cross your fingers for a normal and no issues with the delivery of the meds.

I would love to change clinics, but that would cause more delay. So, I will probably request a new nurse/doctor at the same clinic once this round is over.

So frustrating.

Moral of the story: Be your own advocate. If I hadn't called the lab when two weeks were up, I'd STILL be waiting for the results for a biopsy that was never sent over.

please tell us what clinic this? and yes, agree that you have to advocate for yourself BIG TIME with these fertility places. I'm a total pain in the ass to my nurse but its worth it as I've caught a couple errors. Nothing I've caught though even compares to the total botch your clinic did. This is already so stressful and I'm sorry you had to deal with this.

Omg, OP...I literally felt your pain in every sentence. My embryo's cells should have been sent around the same time as yours to the FEC lab. One way I knew they received them is when I got charged by them. I am awaiting results. I absolutely think that that is extremely irresponsible what they did at your clinic and I am glad you got them to pay for expedited results. It is also 100% true that one needs to keep tabs on everything that a clinic tells, what they do, and what they promise. As one poster said on one of previous threads: people increasingly don't know how to do their jobs today (and causes for that are complex but boil down to being scattered and unable to focus). Anyhow, I am rooting for you and hope it all turns out great in the end. Are you with SGF?

What a nightmare!! I cannot BELIEVE that, even when realizing their error, they didn't offer to look into expediting results and didn't realize that this would affect your upcoming cycle.

Years ago, I actually had a true come to Jesus with one of the doctors at my wife's former clinic. It felt totally warranted and, actually, cathartic. At the VERY least, you should request a new nurse and doctor, as you said. But honestly, unless you have success, I'd change clinics. That is unacceptable.

I was at SGF and had a similar experience with PGS results and waiting and waiting while birth control. I even had to insist that PGS was done in the first place because my RE never mentioned it, but I had 2 m/c's and didn't want to chance that nightmare again. Now, we are at a different clinic and it's so much better!!!! OP I hope you get good results, keep us posted

It's extremely frustrating how you have to spend so much time advocating for yourself, but you do. Sgf messed up my insurance approval and I had to fight big time to have them submit the correct information.

Mine was sent late too and this is very recent (2 weeks ago?) with SGF. They are switching labs and I wonder if that has something to do with it.

makes me angry. they switch labs all the time. when will they be freaking done optimizing things? It used to be that you could get overnight results from a lab in Miami...

Why do people even bother with SGF? It's like the Walmart of ART.

totally disagree. I have been at dominion, Columbia and now SGF and they have the best equipment and labs. This is what matters with IVF.

I thought the protocol is what matters the most with IVF...

The protocol helps determine how many eggs you get, what quality they are, and how well your body is able to accept and grow an embryo. The equipment and lab techs help ensure there is something acceptable to transfer. In each case I say "help" because there's only so much that can be done and a lot of other factors involved.

People bother with SGF because it's big, it's convenient, it's the only place some insurers will cover, and because a lot of people have success there. If you have a typical case and go through their typical process, you very well may wind up with a baby or two.

Is there anyone still following this thread?? I have had a similar situation occur with the Foundation for Embryoinic Competence in NJ. We had 5 embryos biposied and then after more than 2 weeks we heard that there was a "reagent" issue in the lab and our samples could not be read. This resulted in us having to rebiposy our embryos. Unfortunately, 1 didn't survive the thaw the second time and 1 didn't have any cells to offer for a rebiopsy. Of the 3 remaining, we found out that only 1 is normal. Even with the 1 normal embryo, there is no guarantee that it will implant properly due to being biposied twice. I am considering engaging in either media attention or legal services as this seems to be an issue that is happening all too often these days. We were one of twelve patients that were effected by this latest issue at FEC in NJ. If there are any other patients out there that have had this happen at FEC, i'd love to hear about your experience.

Yes I was also affected by the FEC reagent issue. What did they do to compensate you?

Can you please tell me during which time period did they have reagent issue? I wonder if I should rebiopsy too. Thank you.
