Also a member of the Brown community. The alerts we got from the school were not timely. The shooting and 911 calls were a good 20 minutes before the first alert from Brown.

Is it possible it was a tech failure? Every school has had school schooling procedures beaten into their heads for the past 20 years. That is a crazy mistake to make.

“ Ivy rumor mill says that Ella Cook, one of the victims at Brown from Birmingham, Alabama, was a leader in a small conservative group that was opposed to trans ideology. Cops may have indicated to the family she was specifically targeted in the shooting. Supposedly, killer entered with a plan and shot Cook in the face first. Cook was doing the review session with her normal person friend group.“

"One of the victims killed in Saturday’s shooting at Brown University has been identified as Ella Cook, a Brown student and a parishioner at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama.

The church’s Rev. Craig Smalley announced Cook’s death in his service on Sunday morning, calling Cook “incredibly grounded and generous and faithful” and a “bright light” in the church and in her community."

She was the VP of Brown’s (very small) Republican Club. Only 19 years old, and a devout Christian.

RIP, no matter what your political beliefs, this is horrific.

The other victim is from Richmond, 2025 graduate of Midlothian High School. Was at the study session for Econ class.

News:
The American Uzbekistan Association said in a post on social media that Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov was killed in the shooting.

"MukhammadAziz was known for his sharp intellect, kind heart, and quiet willingness to help anyone in need," the organization said. "He carried himself with humility and compassion, earning the respect and affection of those around him. His curiosity, discipline, and generosity reflected both his character and the values of the community that raised him."

"He had a future filled with promise, and his life was cut short far too soon," it said. "His passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, friends, classmates, and the broader Uzbek American community."

His roommate said he was was studying neuroscience and was extremely smart. He also described his friend as a "ball of joy."

"He was kind. He reached out to me as soon as we got roommate assignments," freshman Khimari Manns told CBS News Boston. "Most importantly, he was just present. Whatever you asked him to do, he was always there for you," he said.

"What I do know is that Brown is grieving. I am grieving," Manns said. "The loss of him will be felt throughout this community. His soul truly did reverberate throughout the community."

The U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Jonathan Henick, called Umurzokov's death tragic and said he was deeply saddened.

"We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Umurzokov's family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future," Henick said in a statement.

He wasn't even supposed to be in the Econ study session because he wasn't in the class. He only went to go with a friend because apparently he did stuff like that with friends, was extremely well liked.

Correct

Thanks, I'm an alum and can't wrap my head around this. I am so sad this has happened to my alma mater. Why is this thread in the Politics forum?

It started in the Colleges forum but devolved into a gun control debate so it got moved here.

Which is completely relevant for a college forum these days.

Four kids of people from my own college group chat have now been put in lock-down at college over the last two years.

My DD (UVA) and two of her friends (FSU) experienced lockdowns during mass shootings that led to multiple deaths and injuries. I was relieved when she graduated from high school because I no longer had to worry about school shootings. Little did I know that she would experience one in college.

Is the shooter still on campus? What is going on? I would hate to be a Brown parent right now

The police response was immediate 2-3 minutes.

My son received all of the alerts. Universities have been having countless hoaxes. This is not egregious. Time to confirm before alerting 12k

So why did the shooter go on and shoot 10 other people besides Ella if she was the target? Surely they ran the range of religious affiliation and political ideologies.

It was a hit on the Jewish prof. There is a list of profs in those evil chat rooms. Unfortunately, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Doubtful shooter even knew who she was.

+100

Police were in our building immediately. The alert system did not fail, and constant updates.

We can’t prevent this stuff in the US w/out changing laws and providing mental health care

Kash Patel gave him a 48-hour head start to get away.

Severe incompetence. And the FBI has been gutted rounding up immigrants instead of doing what they were hired to do.

Jewish prof was not in the review session, it was run by the TA

I’m a Brown parent with a kid still on campus. They are not afraid, but obviously deeply upsetting events. I do not believe this was targeted on any specific individual and I will be very surprised if this is where it leads. Of course some of the details couldn’t have been more coincidental to fuel some narratives.
