Because of Taylor Swift:

-I get GOOD NEWS in my algorithm multiple times a day

-Food banks across the country are able to feed so many more people - a single donation of hers fed over 500,000 every month in California

-Her fans are becoming more generous - with those same food banks reporting increased donations

-A new, more humane standard for pay has been established

-Millions of girls and women feel more confident, safer, and inspired

-Countless people across the country have received support during tragic times. Just google it. It’s unbelievable

-An additional 35,000 Americans are now registered to vote, taking part in critical act of democracy

If you have anything negative to say about Taylor Swift (please keep it off my page) - I’m sorry you feel that way - truly - because her impact has been one of incredible positivity with impact that most of us could only dream of.

I’m grateful that I get to live during this time and witness this type of leadership - LOVE in action. 💗

You don’t think this is a tad unhinged?

What is unhinged is that so many people are saying negative things about TS that someone feels compelled to respond.

It's "unhinged" for some percentage of people in the world to express negative opinions about a billionaire pop star? Or is that actually just normal and predictable?

I think it's "unhinged" that a former president does, and that NFL fans are so incensed she goes to her boyfriend's games but don't care about every other girlfriend who goes, or that she has stalkers, and bomb threats and that a whole wing of a political party is posting about her... and grown as women on DCUM have created multiple threads to trash her... yea I think it's "unhinged".

Yeah, it’s weird. But I think it stands out because it’s unhinged and most of us aren’t posting these types of things. I follow a lot of my friends on social media and I’ve never seen anything even remotely like this so… Your anecdote and my antecdote cancel each other out maybe?

Show me a big celebrity, and I’ll show you a person who is unhealthy attached to them. This is nothing new.

Yeah, I think it's called a parasocial relationship. People follow celebrities on Twitter and Instagram and think they are friends when the celebrity gives them a "like." It's a pretty widespread phenomenon and it's very emotionally unhealthy for the fans.

Oh is that what MAGA’s are parasocial interesting.

The PP just sounds like a fan who’s probably surprised a former president post “I HATE TS” which is unhinged.

I agree it is unhinged specifically because humans are complex. To say "never say anything negative about Taylor Swift in my presence" is to argue for her infallibility. But... she's not infallible. I think she has done great things and I also think she sometimes does questionable things. I think it should always be okay to discuss the public actions of very high profile and powerful people (and Taylor Swift is both). Is some of the criticism of her just BS misogyny? Yes of course -- is water wet? But this is true of literally every single woman in the public eye. It's true of Taylor and Beyonce and Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren and Liz Cheney and Lauren Bobert and Ivanka Trump. Does that mean no one should ever be allowed to criticize any of those women for anything? Think about this.

This is the problem with people becoming so obsessed with public figures that they cannot view them with any emotional detachment. It makes it impossible to hold powerful people accountable.

So you may not want to hear it but here you go:

- Taylor Swift releases too much music and a lot of it is bland and boring. I get her megafans just love having more content but as a music fan I think it results in a lot of mediocre music in the world.

- Taylor Swift like pretty much all celebrities is a huge environmental burden that all of us will pay for. Her private jet use alone is worth talking about.

- I find the way she places her personal life in the public eye in a very overt and aggressive way and then complains about any negative coverage of her behavior as unfair to be obnoxious. She does not have to conduct her personal life in such a public way. She can go out to dinner with her friends without tipping off paps and sashaying down the sidewalk with a bunch of famous faces in order to ger her picture taken. She doesn't need to show up to NFL games in bustiers and thigh high boots and being sure to walk past photographers and reporters. She chooses to do these things. To then complain that people are too interested in her personal life? GTFO. She stokes that interest for her own financial gain. It's cynical and she should accept the negative side of being so unnecessarily public just like people like the Kardashians do.

There are also things I think are great about Taylor Swift. Some of her music is great. Her charitable giving is of course good and I appreciate how she's used her platform to encourage political engagement among young people. She seems like a reasonably nice person to the extent that it is possible to figure out what someone is "like" from this distance. Her business acumen and marketing skill and discipline is commendable.

But come on. She's a billionaire pop star. You're going to tell me she's some kind of humanitarian angel sent to bring us joy? No. She's a capitalist who is largely in it for herself. Any Gen Xer who doesn't get that and wants to tell me I am simply not *allowed* to criticize her in their presence clearly wasn't paying attention in the 90s. Y'all are gullible. Absolutely no one has a duty to carry water for Swift or any other super wealthy and powerful celeb. I don't care if you think she's "one of the good ones." Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely dummies.

What’s really strange is how people “actively” dislike her. I don’t like plenty of bands and that means I pay zero attention to them. I don’t see pap shots of them or even look at a list of their discography to know how many songs they released. And I certainly don’t post long screeds about them online.

I think it's very hard to pay zero attention to Taylor Swift. I don't like the band Parquet Courts. I don't like how their music sounds and it actively annoys me when I hear it (my DH likes it). Yet it is very easy for me to avoid listening to Parquet Courts or knowing anything about them despite my DH being a fan. I have never come across a piece of media about them without looking for it (and I don't look for media about them). I do not even know the names of the band members or their albums or the names of any individual songs. No one cares that I do not like Parquet Courts and if I'm at a party and someone says they like that band or puts on music by the band I can say "oh yeah I don't really like them -- just not my thing" and no one argues with me about it or tells me I'm a bad person or stupid. They are just like okay.

To take a more high profile artist I also really didn't like Father John misty when he first started as a solo artist. I found him super pretentious and something about his music annoyed me. I have since come around on him and now I "get it" but no one minded that I didn't like him back then. I had friends who were surprised I didn't as it seems like the kind of music I like. I don't know exactly what turned me of too him initially. It was hard to explain but I had a visceral negative reaction. No one cared. It was like "ok I guess you don't want tickets to the fjm show with me then." It was fine.

I also do not like Pink or the group Blackpink. I have friends who are huge fans. They don't care that I don't like these artists.

And so on. But unlike everyone I just mentioned it is not possible to be a person in 2024 and not hear Taylor Swift music and hear about her personal life on a regular basis. Even if you don't go looking for it. If you tell a Taylor Swift fan you are not into her music they will get mad at you. If you say something like "I don't know why I don't like her I just don't it's weird" they will accuse you of being a misogynist who hates all music by women even if you actually love a lot of female artists. If you express fatigue with hearing about her personal life or seeing images of her all over the place then you are a hater who doesn't support successful female artists.

Disliking Taylor Swift is a totally different thing than disliking any other musical artist. There are threads on this website where people express distates for Olivia Rodrigo and Dave Grohl and Lin manuel miranda and a host of other people and they don't go to 100 pages or get filled with people calling anyone names for not liking these artists.

There is an attitude that you have to like Taylor Swift and that if you don't there is something bad about you. And that's why people "actively" dislike her. If she wasn't shoved down everyone's throat all the time I think people would have more passive dislike of her music but they'd be quiet about it. But there is a militancy to the idea that Taylor Swift is universal and you better get on board and I think that makes people mad and they get more vocal about their dislike in order to fight back against the perception that their opinion is not allowed.

If these threads about not liking Swift were greeted with silence or just "cool story bro" then I think they'd die out quickly. They get long because the Swifties come in and overreact to pretty banal statements of dislike and feel they must go to bat for this billionare hit machine. The Swifties are the reason these debates get so drawn out because they don't just let people have their dislike. Just let them have it! It doesn't impact you in any way.

Conflating Donald Trump saying he hates Taylor Swift because she endorsed Harris for president with someone saying "I have tried to like Taylor Swift's music but it just sounds the same and bland to me" is nuts though.

Donald Trump sucks and the people hating on Swift because of her political views suck. First because you have to be a nutjob to like Trump at this point and second because caring about the politics of a pop star is a waste of time -- there are pop stars with weird conservative views I don't like but I don't lose sleep over it.

But that's separate from a discussion of whether people like her music or her public image. You can be a Harris-voting pro-immigrant pro-LGBTQ pro-choice liberal and still not like Swift's music and that doesn't make you unhinged. It just means you don't like Swift's music and that's allowed. I personally think it's also okay to be annoyed by her presence at football games -- I always roll my eyes about the fixation on celebrities at sporting events and it annoyed me when I was watching the US Open and they kept cutting to like Seth Rogan and Tina Fey in the stands because who cares. It's not personal to the celeb I just think that fixation is silly. I like watching football and don't want to see an ad for Taylor Swift in the middle of game coverage because that's not why I tune in. I'm actually tired of the Kelce brothers as well -- the whole lot of them are overexposed and the fact that Jason still gets tons of coverage despite having retired is annoying. At least when Travis is covered it's because he's actually playing football (though then it will be some puff piece about him performing with Taylor at a concert in the off season and just... sigh. I am tired of all the Swift-Kelce stuff in the NFL. Sorrynotsorry. It was a little cute and funny at first but the fatigue is setting in for me.

I agree it’s very hard to avoid news or exposure to Taylor Swift these days. If you are not a fan, that would be a little bit of a bummer.

What I don’t understand is why you would want to spend a lot of time on threads like these trying to convince other people not to like her because that’s what it seems like. There is a poster complaining that you can’t say anything negative about Taylor because her fans will tear you apart. OK then maybe don’t start countless threads on how bland and talentless or whatever she is? And then add page up upon page upon page to fill these threads.

Someone posted a friend of theirs weird unhinged rant about how much she loves Taylor Swift. But I’m not sure that’s weirder than some of the weird unhinged rants AGAINST Taylor Swift and I’m seeing this thread and many others on this forum.

Also, your phone picks up on all this and if you want to be less exposed to Taylor Swift, don’t constantly click on threads about her and post about her, and you will be less exposed to her. Some of this, at least you are bringing on yourself!

It’s just everywhere.

We went to a farm for the typical fall festival thing. They had a Taylor Swift themed corn maze.

There have been a number of Taylor Swift themed kids’ events in my area.

It’s like no one wants to pick anything else when they’re deciding how to theme something.

No that’s not what this part of the thread is talking about we are talking about unhinged posts about Taylor. Trumps was unhinged. The NFL haters are unhinged … she doesn’t film or post it, the NFL does and they have always panned to family, but you don’t like this one person they pan too.

It’s unhinged to choose 1 over exposed person to hate. There are overexposed people year to year to year to year… you chose this one to hate.
