Valor started this tournament for rec players so they could funnel money from cya and sya rec leagues to their pocket. Its a truly terrible event, almost laughably bad. |
| I'm bummed they got rid of that hideous south of the border logo. it was....unique! |
My child plays CYA rec and we were told it's just all stars from CYA. We weren't aware there were other leagues and full teams playing. |
It's fine. It's just usually a hot weekend. |
Its just rec teams from sya and cya scrimmaging each other for a large fee. |
How much does it cost? |
|
They charge fees like its a real tournament ($600,$700 per team) and then the kids show up and its just sya and cya teams scrimmaging.
|
Last year I payed around $70. We had 5 or 6 extra practices and played other teams then just cya and sya. |
|
My kids really enjoyed those events when they played rec at SYA. It was fun to play against clubs outside of SYA. We normally play against the same 6-7 teams from the same club per season, which are half the duration of a travel season. So it makes the rec players feel good to play against other clubs. It costed $70 which included an all stars shirt and extra practices with coaches and players from other teams.
Maybe it is comical to these exalted travel parents. But those were memorable times for us lowly rec parents. |
The problem with the Valor event (can't call it a tournament really) is you can literally feel their contempt for the rec kids. My kids loved the Herndon and the FPYC tournaments. When we had to do the Valor thing, it was just pathetic. Rec teams and All Star teams were all jumbled up in the same bracket because they didn't have enough teams. We paid for an "all star tournament" but I don't think they even played one actual all star team. Game scores were like 20-0. (They didn't even put the right scores into the app because they were too ridiculous.) The field didn't look like a tournament or anything was even happening there. The medals were breaking in half as the coach passed them out. Travel clubs shouldn't run events for rec kids. They don't respect them and just want their money and it shows. |
| It must be very lucrative for Valor to continue to embarrass themselves with this tournament every year |
This is why I’m confused. This person keeps saying rec teams vs all star teams but we were told it’s just all stars. I’m not aware of any full rec teams playing, just a few kids from each team (like the coaches kids and one or two others from each team). Is this person just full of shit? |
|
No, the year my son participated there were regular rec teams mixed in and
playing with rec all star teams, and different ages mixed together. No competitive games. Their current ad says "any rec team or all star team". They will take anyone's money and don't care if its a decent experience for the kids. |
| It’s fiesta weekend! Oh joyous wonder. |
And not all "all star" teams are equivalent so I don't know that matters as much. Loudoun has a program and the all-star kids practice together all season. Other clubs at the end you make the team and get a couple of practices is. It's an extension to the rec season some kids and families like that opportunity. If you don't, don't sign up. |
