No. Why would I be? They’re trying to raise money to replace the crappy ass projectors our children’s classrooms.

Why are you annoyed?

They already had a fall fundraiser and how about the county buys them instead of badgering parents? Or how about, God forbid, they do something in the classroom without technology? Like actual paper and pencil work instead of the screens crap. Parents want less screen time.

This was discussed ad nauseam at the last general PTO meeting. FCPS will not pay to replace the projectors until the school gets refurbished (…in 2033).

Also, I would argue that SMARTboards are the one piece of technology that classroom teachers actually need to effectively teach their lessons. Teachers, correct me if I’m wrong

No. They are not supported anymore in the county and newer schools have the projector projecting on a white board. Mine doesn’t work and I want it down. But it costs the school $2500 to take it down.

I didn't see this in the meeting minutes, but if the readathon raises 30k, will there be enough money for the new projectors or will there need to be another fundraiser later on?

I don’t know. I’m not at Navy. Just pointing out that smart boards aren’t required. And many schools don’t have them. Projectors are a different thing and are now mounted to ceiling.

The daily messages about buses leaving 30 min after school might have something g to do with it

+1 Also, they make the kids sit 3 to a seat. It’s too crowded. Plus, their backpacks are incredibly heavy, and they may have an instrument with them. If my kid didn’t have to carry a laptop every day in their backpack, we’d consider it.

Good. I was pissed when the smartboards were added to the classrooms and took over the whole white board so you couldn’t use it.

Huh. My kids ride the bus to Nagy and it has not occurred to me that I should drive them and deal with that line every day to save them from these so called hardships. I had a 45 minute bus ride to school in grades 4-6 with the same overcrowding and instrument issues. And textbooks at least as heavy as the laptop. But I’m one of those people who thinks we make life a little too easy for kids nowadays which is leading to them having zero tolerance for inconvenience and mild discomfort.

Maybe you should ask your PTA to fund laptop charging carts for every upper grade classroom so that your children don't have to bring their laptops home every night, then they could take the bus.

So drive them the one day a week they have band or strings and let them take the bus the rest of the time.

That is what they are raising money for. Smart projectors. So they can remove the SMARTboards that don’t work.

The kids need to use their laptop for homework so they need to bring it home Also, there is no space in each room for laptop charging carts. It would be a waste of money quite frankly.

No thanks. Our bus is too crowded and it’s 3 to a seat. There’s no requirement to take the bus. Many Navy families drive because it works for them. That’s why the kiss n ride line is so crowded.

Is the Readathon similar to the Boosterthon?

Does the company take part of the money raised for the school?

My kids are at an elementary school near by and their homework is all on paper. They leave their laptops at school.

I’ve read a few things online that say schools get to keep about 80% of the Read a Thon funds. I wonder where the other 20% goes? Parents should know their contributions aren’t going 100% to the school.
