| With Uber, I see parents less even at drop offs at our home, a Lyft or Uber drive brings them over and picks them up. Is this the norm for parents now? |
| I certainly wouldn't let my child -- a boy, btw -- take Uber alone at night. Maybe not even the day. Do these parents not read the news? |
| We allow DD14 to take uber in a variety of circumstances, including sometimes to/from evening events such as concerts. Our reason was, basically, "why not"? DD is on our family uber account, so I get texts when she requests and completes a ride, see the driver's name and license, and can track her trip. It seems safe enough to us that we're willing to allow it because it's convenient and gives her what we consider a desirable amount of increased independence if she's not constrained by my schedule and ability to drive her places. |
Can you link to all the stories of how Uber drivers are committing crimes against their passengers? I have a 14yo dd who uses uber. I see the news but I didn't realize the news was full of stories like that. I can think of one or two where the driver yelled at a passenger but that's it. Are they murdering or raping passengers? Stealing their purses? I'm much more wary of public transit or walking alone. |
None of what you listed will prevent her from getting rped or molested. Sorry to be harsh and graphic, but you ound clueless. |
Your 14 year old daughter is going to concerts without you, and to and from concerts without you? |
14 year old girls are more likely to be raped or molested by someone they know, not an Uber driver. |
Did you know that the vast majority of rapes/molestations to teenage girls are committed by people they know? Sorry to be harsh and graphic, but you ound clueless. |
Yes I'm well aware of that fact, but we aren't talking about that, We're talking about the lack of safety of Uber., but I guess it's just a big joke to you. So go ahead and laugh and bury your head in the sand with your apps, it's your kid's life. |
| Why would they let 13-15yr olds go to concerts? |
| This isn't a thing. 14 yo girls don't go to concerts ending at midnight alone. If they go at all they go in groups. |
| I think you are supposed to be 18 to use Uber. |
| It's unlikely your 14-year old will engage in non-consensual sex with the Uber driver. It's more likely she'll bang some dude at the concert for beer or weed. |

I am the original poster. My 14 old DD is not allowed to use Uber but her friends use it all the time. She thinks I am being too strict and I told her in this case I am protecting my child from being placed in a situation she shouldn't be. I will not go into further details about her friends and these Uber drives but only to say it's very concerning to me and my husband. Maybe we are too conservative but being able to follow your child's Uber ride on GPS and texting during the trip does not keep them safe if the texting stops and the GPS shows your child going in a different direction than home or the driver is behaving inappropriately. I guess you can call the police. There are plenty of cases of assault and even assault of a 13 year old girl but I am not sure why someone needs an incident like this to justify whether or not to let their young daughter or son ride with Uber alone.

It is a thing. They may go in groups and yes alone but some take Uber home. What time do you think concerts end if it starts at 8pm with a headliner? |
