What reading level did your high-reading 3rd grader end the year with?

Report cards arrived today and my child's reading level didn't improve over the last quarter. Curious where your child ended up if they're generally in the top reading group.

Its not really that important given they have a policy of never officially grading any child more than one full grade ahead on a report card. Even if they are reading 3 grades ahead, the reporting doesn't accommodate that.

These reports are a racket. Our teacher reported a regressed score in Q1 so I said something and she admitted she just stopped testing DC at a certain point and yes, his level was higher.

The score reported from the GT letter was 4 levels higher than the report card. We are 2nd grade but don't put much stock in reports. Do save them to show future teachers if they get it wrong and it impacts your kid, however.

Oh I didn't know that. Why do they do that?

I don't think this is true. At the end of 3rd grade for my now 6th grade DC, report card showed DC at a 5th grade reading level.

^ Forgot to mention.... it was level U.

That was 3+ years ago and U is just one level into 5th (in the top range) so I think this is plausible that it has changed or maybe you're thinking of another report which doesn't follow this rule.

It is certainly not true. In the mid-year progress report my 1st grader was in the middle of the 3rd grade band.

OK... but it is still more than 1 year ahead, and it was the end of year report card.

I think people are under the impression that just because school A and B does it one way, the whole of mcps must be doing it that way. Not true. For example, many have complained that their kids don't learn cursive or have spelling in ES, and others have stated that their ES does teach those things (our ES included).

Our teacher held back the top readers so its a mute point on what reading level they are on as it wasn't an accurate reflection. Our school did not do any cursive or handwriting nor spelling or grammar.

My third grader was reading at the CC level (7th grade). She is amazing and our teacher is giving her challenging materials. We are in a W cluster ES.

Precisely... different schools do things differently. Unless it is specifically stated as an MCPS policy, things like this are school dependent.

What as your kid's reading level last and this marking period OP? You asked but didn't share.

My 3rd grader just finished at V. She was at U last report card. I doubt it means much at this point?

Op here. Finished at "S" --was told at school that they aren't used to 3rd graders being that high. I was surprised since it doesn't seem that high. And it was the highest group in the grade (they pulled from the different classrooms)

The humblebragging on this thread is appalling, even for the standards of this board. Some of us have kids struggling to read, and having people shove "my kid is a V" or "my kid is a CC(?)" in your face isn't cool.
