That is because Simone Biles doesn’t make money hand over fist for her work. Nor does she use crap tactics to make more money. Simone has some endorsements, but is clearly doing gymnastics because she is gifted and not looking to grift her fans in the way Taylor does.

I like how people are simultaneously arguing that Taylor definitely didn’t release the variants to knock other female artists out of contention for #1 while also arguing that she did it and everyone does it and it’s fine.

We don’t know. There’s no way to know if she did or didn’t. But yes, either way, it is in fact fine. It’s a market. A free one. She can release what she wants when she wants. People can buy what they want when they want. In what sense is she “blocking” others from achieving success when more people could buy that album?! Wtf. It’s not a question of “ethics”. The market is the market.

And that is where we will disagree. There are no ethical billionaires. I don’t respect her business as being ethical nor do I think taking advantage of people is admirable. Even if she is donating, why does one person get to make those choices of who gets donations? It isn’t a good idea to have one person in charge of so much wealth because that person only sees things from their perspective and will only give to what they want to, not what is most needed. All while her business is using other people to make the cheap items she sells with her name so she can “give away money”

You can respect that, but I will see you as naive for thinking anything is really a free market. Our lives are not just supply and demand. You can respect that shit, but know that I and many others find it to be shit. She is a symbol of capitalism in many ways. I think capitalism needs lots of restraints to keep it from eating the world and humanity. Taylor and you clearly disagree with me. You are definitely winning as far as your way is what is happening in the world. The problem is, you are also destroying the world.

I 💯 that there aren’t ethical billionaires. People who make money without harming anyone can be an ethical billionaire. Philanthropic billionaires can be ethical billionaires. Ethical is also subjective, and it sounds like per your definition she can’t ever be, but I respectfully disagree. I also highly doubt that she alone is determining where to donate her money, she’s a business with a team after all, but even if she does yeah, it’s her money. She decides. How can you possibly argue with the level of donations she’s given to food banks? This feels like a weird level of anger directed at an entertainer who hasn’t harmed anyone and has just made money.

I think if you objectively applied your criteria for “ethical billionaire” to someone other than Swift they would be found wanting.

It’s ok to disagree. I disagree with you. And this is a thread about Travis and Taylor. If you feel that strongly about discussing the ethics of billionaire musicians maybe start a thread on it.

Ah. Well, there we have it. The unhinged socialist disapproves not only of TS, but of capitalism in general. I think we can all move on now because it’s clear this person needs therapy.
DP

Yes, we are done. Once anyone uses “unhinged or “needs therapy” you have clearly moved beyond the ability to construct an argument. Look, we agree on something!

DP. I hate when someone throws out "unhinged." It's often a way to quiet a woman from speaking because we're conditioned not to voice our opinions too loudly or appear "hysterical."

NP. My main gripe about “unhinged” is how it’s used so egregiously here. The word has lost all meaning. Someone will be like “I think hugging my kids is okay” and some lunatic will come along to tell them they’re unhinged.

DP. You’re comparing the PPP’s rant about capitalism “ruining the world” to an innocuous comment like, “I think hugging my kids is okay”? Enough said.

You are not sane. The world is not being destroyed. You need to calm down.

DP. Prepare to be lectured for calling out a clearly unstable person.

What was her thinking about how this album would land in the middle of her tour?

She released it as quickly as she could because she hoped she still had a chance with Matty and didn’t want him to make a commitment (or a baby!). This was her cry out to him, no matter what the prologues said. That was done for the sake of the rest of us. But TTPD clearly did not have the desired effect.

We heard that a lot in April and May. She was wrecked over MH and would take him back if she could. Travis would have just gone away like every other boyfriend. I guess the album also convinced her anti-MH fans that she'd been serious about him.

You people are loons.
She took bits and pieces and strong feelings and made something out of it.
She crafted songs and then wanted to play them for the world because she was proud of them.
She is proud of herself.
And she deserves to be.
And I don’t know how you think this album “landed” other than with millions of sales and her dominating the charts.
Also with plenty of critical acclaim.

The first time I heard her latest album, I actually hated it. So many words! I told my daughter she needed an editor. But then I listened to it again, several times, over and over - and now I love it. There are only a few songs I don't like - the rest are fantastic. I think she outdid herself. And the weirdos who take every word literally are beyond silly.

Interesting. I’ve always taken a bunch of listens to start to appreciate her new music, and then I listen on repeat, totally obsessed. That never happened with this album - it’s the first time since 1989. I’ve given up.

Me too. I literally love 15 of the 31 songs and like all but 2.

31 songs, that’s insane. She’s amazing.

Isn’t the album a flop? What singles are been pop hits?

Swift could record an hour of her taking violent bowel movements and people would force themselves to listen to it until they loved it. It would sell in the millions. She has succeeded in turning grown women into fan babies.
