How prevalent is Phentermine for weight loss?

Anonymous
I'm 5'2" and 130 lb; wanted to get back to my pre-baby 120. Being strong and having muscle is important and I already lift, but I'm aware that diet is the mainstay of weight loss, so I visited a nutritionist recommended by a woman at my gym. She made some pretty common-sense diet recommendations, but then I was stunned when she suggested Phentermine. I don't make lifestyle changes that I can't continue so I said no thanks and have just cut the carbs and alcohol down in my diet (which has been pretty effective). Curious as to other's experiences about this issue.

Funny enough I was just coming on here to do a search. I had my baby at 28 years old, and spent the majority of my pregnancy on bedrest with hyperemesis. My weight actually yo-yoed during the 13 months I breastfed. Now I'm 30, and my weight has gone from 215 to 191, and the scale has not budged. I met with a nutrionist a year ago, and follow plan. I bought a treadmill-and actually use it. I still feel out of sorts.

After further testing, I was diagnosed with pcos about a month ago. My doctor said she knows I'm very active, working with a nutrionist, and not a couch potato. She said pcos makes it very hard to lose weight because it's a hormonal imbalance. She actually prescribed phentermine and metformin to help get my pcos under control. I was never previously overweight, and have always been active. My "lifestyle" isn't the problem. My insulin and hormones are! I just started the medication, so I'll update in a month!

I'm not from the DC area and this board is the only place I've ever heard it mentioned.

I personally have zero respect for its users. I realize there are some people with legit medical issues but the vast majority, it seems, just don't want to put in the work to get fit. They WANT a diagnosis so they have an excuse.

There's a long thread on the medical board here in DCUM discussing this.

I am using it right now and don't give a flying F whether you respect me or not. Your judgmental ass judges me when I'm fat and sick too I'm pretty sure. I tried for years to do it on my own and failed. My doctor suggested it (I didn't even know it was an option) and for the first time in years I'm eating healthy, working out, lost 20 lbs and have 60 lbs to go. So go just go F&** yourself!!!

NP here. Congrats on your weight loss. How long did it take you to lose the 20 lbs? Where did you get the Phentermine? Thanks!

It took me 2 months. I eat between 1200-1300 calories per day now because I want to be able to keep doing this when I stop the pills. My GP has been on me for years to lose the weight and I knew I needed to as well. But I just had no energy and was always hungry on 1200 calories/day. The phentermaine gave me the energy to work out and it takes care of the appetite enough to make better choices. It's definitely helping me so far.

The Phentermine gives you the discipline to eat healthy and work out?

It gives me the extra push. It's not like I don't get hungry at all. I do. But I can make a choice to eat a little less and a healthier option vs. scarfing down a burger and fries. Phentermine definitely gives you more energy (I mean it's speed) so it's easier to get off your butt and work out.

Exactly. Exaxtly why PPs are saying they judge you. I don't get it. If someone straight up told you they were snorting coke because it helped them lose weight, would your response still be so visceral??

For me, the phentermine takes away the compulsion to over eat, to choose unhealthy food, and to be obsessed with food. Taking off this edge has made all the difference in my weight loss. I've lost about 30 pounds in the last three months. I'm building and healthy habits and I know that when I cycle off the medication I'm going to have to have change my life style and approach to food.

Judge if you want, I really don't care. When you are overweight and stuck in a cycle where you can't break out, a boost like this can make all the difference. The confidence I have now and the new habits I've built will help me to not gain the weight back.

I focused on changing my food choices, getting more comfortable with the feelings of hunger, eating intentionally and focusing on plant based foods and healthy protein sources, walking every day, lifting weights, drinking water, avoiding processed carbs.

I'm not foolish enough to think it's going to be easy to keep the weight off when I stop taking medication. However I am committed to a lifestyle change and I think that gives me a fighting chance.
