Daycare and diaper rash advice

I'm trying to figure out if this is a normal experience or not..

I have an almost 2 year old in daycare. He has had 4-5 really raw diaper rashes in the past 8 months or so. First few times, I chalk it up to him pooping soon after his last diaper change, then sitting in it until his next one. Then he started pooping consistently right before pick up. I asked them to check him an extra time right around when I do pick up since almost every day he had poop at pick up.

This improved his diaper rash but again this week they didn't do it and he had a rash so bad that he was walking funny and cried SOO bad when I changed his diaper at the center myself when I picked him up. He couldn't even sit in his high chair for dinner and I had to hold him in my lap. He cried so hard and had to stand up while I did his bath.

I'm really upset, but is this just something that is normal and happens when it's bad timing? He is also talking and didn't alert the teachers that he pooped, which I know he could've done..

Would changing daycares even help at all ? Other daycare options nearby are a LePort or Primrose. I have a few other things I don't like about the school but he has so many friends there, I'm not sure I want to make the change.

I think you should mention to the director the number of times you've picked him up and he's been in his own poop.

Once in a while it happens. Near daily? Not okay.

I think his caregivers would smell a dirty diaper, he shouldn't have to tell them. If it were me, I would wonder what other things they are ignoring. I'm sorry your son was in pain. You should have a direct conversation with his caregivers and the director. Hopefully this can be avoided in the future. Just a thought, is it possible your son has a food allergy or intolerance that could lead to rashes?

Thank you... I have talked to his teachers about it quite a few times. I haven't raised it with the director yet, mostly since I do pick ups and she's harder to find then. I think I will do this today though just so they know about it.

He doesn't seem to have any food allergies, it is always directly related to him sitting in his own poop for extended periods

Absolutely not. I would be furious! My two year old gets a mild red color on his bum and the caregivers at the center immediately start changing him every hour, putting diaper cream on, and constantly checking for a dirty diaper in between. The warmer weather means more sweat and humidity trapped under the diaper so try to go bare bottom at home if you can.
So sorry for your son! Sounds painful. He should not be sitting in a dirty diaper and they need to figure out a way to solve that problem.

Thank you for the response! okay your center sounds way more proactive and caring. I will raise the issue with the director today.

This is not normal at all. I have been sending DD to a center for a year now and she has not gotten diaper rash. The few times she's red there from constipation (hard stool) they applied cream. In fact, more diligently than we do. It's definitely a valid concern.

No no no. Kids have regular and frequent diaper changes and if they poop, they get changed immediately. In my years of daycare I have never had a kid get a diaper rash on my watch.

+1. My DD is only 6 months old so not as much experience as the rest of you but her in home daycare changes all of the kids every two hours and check them pretty consistently for poop in between the regular changes. As others have said, raise the issue with the director since the teacher is ignoring you.

This. If they poopnot smells and they get changed immediately not sit in it for 2 hrs. Unacceptable. Once would be one thing but 4 times?? I would be at a different daycare by now. Can't imagine the pain and discomfort. Poor little guy.

This happened to me and I went crazy. It is fine to do regular diaper checks but you must change poppy diapers. After horrible diaper rash incidents, which I photographed, I went to the director and insisted that an incident report be written. The teacher had to check every hour and initial a schedule that she had done so. Frankly, I thought someone should've been fired. It is neglect.

That's quite a long time not have a new diaper if he's getting diaper rashes that are so painful and so frequent.

He shouldn't have to tell the teacher he pooped. You're paying them as part of the deal - check diapers frequently and certainly the smell or saginess would be a giveway.

Try laying off acidic foods in the mean time. That will help the rash heal.

For a one time incident? Wow. That is over kill. I what OP posted is not good because it's happened frequently. But a diaper rash can happen in a near instant from acidic foods.

Elevate it to the director. If it's not handled, file a complaint with the licensing board and change daycares. I could maybe let it slide once and would be upset, but not all the time! Not changing a poopy diaper is neglectful. And there's no way the teachers don't smell it. Your poor little guy!
