Graduation gift for CC graduate - what's to give

Anonymous
I never heard of community colleges having a cap and gown ceremony. But it's happening. What is an appropriate gift to take to the graduation party? The graduate will be going to a 4 year university next so there will be another graduation in two years.

A GC to bed baths and beyond or target?

And CC cap and gown ceremonies are common, they're getting a degree.

You sound miffed about this.

I always thought of cc = junior high school. It's junior college right? This is the first time I've heard of cc cap and gown graduation and party.

I guess every body gets a trophie for everything now days. OK, I will open my wallet in celebration.

Why are you so angry? If you don't want to give than don't give. But, it is accomplishment. You do have to study and work hard to get the AA degree and not just "everybody gets an a trophy." Is this a family member and you feel obligated? If you feel that way and you could also just give at this graduation and skip the one two years from now. ( except to say congratulations)

You sound very mean though

I don't even understand why there's a ceremony? I've had many friends and relatives go through this. They just go straight to the 4 year college. I didn't know a ceremony was an option.

Because it is an accomplishment! They studied and worked at school and work. Why wouldn't they have a graduation ceremony? Isn't that what you do when you finish and get a degree?

Some people attend CC in order to get an Associate's Degree, not as a stepping stone to a 4 year college.

It's not an accomplishment if they're going on to get a 4 year degree. Universities don't have "half way" parties or anything like that. Why should they?

Because 4 year universities don't issue an Associates Degree mid-way through- if they didn't then they'd likely have a graduation...

This. My BIL has an Associate's degree but 20yrs later has a successful career in management in manufacturing, he is the #1 guy running one of the manufacturing plants for a multinational company. His graduation was a big deal.

If it's someone going on to a 4yr college, they likely don't see it as graduating. Otherwise, what would you give any college graduate? My vote is a gift card or cash, since the person is likely stepping out into the professional world, maybe moving out if they've been living at home while attending school, etc.

Some people live under rocks with no understanding of life. I can't with this thread.

This is the route my DD will be taking. She's getting her AA degree in Public Health and then moving on to Temple. The CC does have a ceremony and we plan on celebrating as well. It's normal.

You can get an AA from a university too. My best friend did this. She went to a 4 year university, got accepted into a pharmacy program after 2 years. Her 1st university issued her an AA when she left to start pharmacy school.

Just because you have never heard of something doesn't mean it does not exist.

Go out to any community college website and look at the commencement dates and activities. They all have them.
