| My neighbor just texted me that she got notified via phone that her son failed one of his SOL's. He's in the same grade as my son, and they took the SOL just this Monday. Do they always notify you this quickly if I child fails? |
| Yes, our Principal said she usually calls the same day. They find out almost immediately. |
| They know... my son has told me the scores/grades for all of his SOLs. |
Presumably they want your kid to retake? |
How, my kids have no idea! |
YES, she was asking me if I thought he should retake it. He has reading comprehension issues, so she's not sure if taking it again would be any help. Plus he gets stressed. I told her not to tell him and move on. No point in stressing out a 4th grader for a test that doesn't count for anything. |
| Yes, the school finds out almost immediately and if your child is within a certain range of passing (I can't remember the exact number), they are eligible for a quick retake. I'm sure the school wants your neighbor's child to do a retake because if they pass, that helps the school. |

I am curious about this, too. We have a third grader, so this is our family's first time involved in SOLs.
My sister told me that my nephew in high school passed a particular SOL on the first try this year. (He has struggled.) But I am wondering how they already knew the result and haven't had a chance to ask her. Do high schoolers have on-the-spot access to results? Do elementary kids only find out right away if they fail? |
|
Kids (and parents) usually don't find out until the last day of school or end of year report card. But, if they hit the just barely failed area that allows for a retake, you will find out fast, because they want your kid to remediate and retake. Up to you to allow or not. May not help your kid. It's mostly to help the school.
I'm not sure that they inform parents whose kids fail by enough that they can't retake, though. |
A score of 375-399 is in the eligible retake range. If you don't hear anything the score was either a 400+ or 374-. Parents are notified fairly quickly because the test window ends soon and schools have to reteach/remediate for those who will be retaking the test. I can typically see my students' scores the same day. |
| Yes to the above. They let you know f your child failed the same day only if your child is eligible for re-take. We had it happened with 1 last year and we declined a re-take. |
1000000% Doesn't help the kid at all. Totally for the numbers game for school-wide pass rates. I would only agree to it if your kid is laid back about tests and/or had some extenuating circumstance on the day of the test. |
| I agreed to it because I know my child can pass |
whats the point of making them retake it? in Elementary/Middle school level? |
| only about 1/2 students passed after the retake (foia request) |
