In this often tough IEP season, I thought it might encourage others to see this video.
http://www.upworthy.com/jessica-mccabe-has-adhd-her-message-to-her-mom-is-tearful-and-moving?c=reccon3 I know many of us with kids who have ADHD have faced these challenges to get our kids help. |
| I've seen this before and it does resonate with me. My daughter has also thanked me for the medication, though not as directly- she is only 12. But her telling me that she can finally listen, complete her work, and "feel" like a normal kid is what helps me with the decision. I wish the judgmental people in this country would recognize adhd as a real and not made-up diagnosis, but until that time, us parents will have to continue to do what we know is right for our kids. |
| PP, can you share what medication/dosage is working for your child? Thanks! |
|
I'm a grown up who was medicated as a child. I personally think it was criminal that I was medicated - frankly I think it was the turmoil in my house that made it difficult to concentrate not a medical issue. But they diagnosed me with ADHD and as a result, I can barely remember my childhood at all. My memories only really begin when I quit taking it as a young adult.
Funny, it's supposed to be genetic but my kids concentrate just fine. |
My husband feels the exact same way. He said it completely altered his personality and feels that giving a child such strong stimulants on a daily basis is very wrong; he really resents his parents for it |
just because there is a genetic link or someone in your family has/had it does not mean you'll also have it!! if that were the case my DD would have ADHD, just like my DS.
also, my DS cannot learn without his medication - but I am not blaming ADHD on this one. I'm blaming our educational system here in the US. We have it all wrong with respect to how to administer instruction to our kids, how to design the classroom, how much or how little outside time they get, the exams they have to take etc. it is all wrong. |
PP here - I have five. You'd think if there was a genetic component one of the children would have symptoms, would you not? But they are all doing really well. Anyways, that is besides the point - the point is that like the other poster wrote, my personality was completely altered by 10+ years on amphetamines. |
|
| Different poster but ...have you googled amphetamines and memory loss?? It's definitely a thing; you should do your research before making such statements |
I was not on any drugs throughout childhood and my memory is very spotty. I remember my childhood overall (and you must, too, or you wouldn't remember the "turmoil"), but very few specific events. Everyone's memories work differently. Stop blaming your poor parents for the problems in your life and take responsibility. |
Wow - we all have anecdotes up the ass. For me? I resent my parents for being SO afraid of any medication that I suffered all through my childhood and in my early 20s until I finally was able to take medication. To this day my parents gasp and get upset if I take an aspirin for a headache or midol for my period. They tell me to grit through it. So I PERSONALLY THINK IT WAS CRIMINAL THAT I WAS NOT MEDICATED. You're ridiculous to make such blanket statements.

Uhhh hi. Read the first two words of my post...? |
I'm pretty sure Jessica McCabe (...and you) are anecdotes too, bud. My husband and pp's experiences are just as valid |
Yep - that's my point. we all have anecdotes. |
| There are anecdotes. Then there are kids like mine who couldn't go to school but for the medication. It's not really a choice for some children or parents. As our neurologist told s, when it's severe it's not whether but when. |
