In a long mass email today, Chancellor Wilson sings the praises of LEAP:
"The scale and success of LEAP—even in year one—is unprecedented. Every day, across more than 4,000 classrooms, in 115 schools, and for nearly 50,000 students, our teachers are using the skills and tools that their own peers give them to ensure academic success for all of our young people. " He ends by saying, "While LEAP is going well, we also know that we can improve, which is why we’ve been listening to feedback from teachers to ensure that next year is even better. Teachers on here have described LEAP as a joke and huge waste of time. What do teachers think of it now that it is late in the year? What do you think of the prospects for improvement next year? |
| It might not be a waste of time in the 40/40 schools, where teachers probably need more steering/coaching to stay on track. |
I wonder if this is really happening, and if so, how? When Wilson visits schools, does he meet with teachers and staff? Is he really seeking feedback? Otherwise it sounds like the Chancellor may well have been co-opted by the DCPS central staff. |
| Not at a 40/40 but at a Title 1. It's a complete waste of time. They are regurgitating PDs they did 5 years ago. It's unreal. |
| At the Title I school I know best, it is a huge waste of time. It also throws the schedule off because kids start class at one time three days a week and a different time the other two days. It's hard for families to remember what time school starts. And the places they have the kids go when the weather isn't good and classes start late (library, stay in the cafeteria) are really chaotic and the kids don't get a good start to the school day. |
| I'm a teacher at a title 1 and it's helpful. |
How so? I'd love to hear the benefits. |
Are you a new teacher? |
| I'm a veteran teacher (15 years) and it's a waste of time. To be candid, I teach secondary math and all we do is look over the scripted math curriculum which I have negative opinions about. But that is for another forum. |
| The general opinion of the teachers at my JKLM is that it is a waste of time. |
No. Ten year teacher. It's helpful because we have an amazing coach. The coach makes it or breaks it I assume and ours makes everything revelant to our specific needs. Every professional development has had time for us to take what we talked about and apply them to our class/specific students. It does take up a lot of time and sometimes I'm tired but it really has been a valuable resource. (I'm younger kids) |
Why does leap change the time when school starts? That would be a huge headache for most families. |
I know I'm not PP but it doesn't for us. |
PDs from 2009, except the coaches then had something better that CANVAS to work with and worked in learning cycles. Just like in that ridiculous video were admin could not explain what LEAP is jokingly, almost one year later and know what can honestly tell you what it is doing to improve schools or instruction. Teachers leaving, schools have to have LEAP sessions after school or during lunch because no time in the day to meet or plan, and the staff in LEAP office downtown, no comment!!!! |
Ours too. |
