I think there's a lot of publicity potential in targeting department of education through a FCPS lens. Heck, just the DEI department in and of itself can be a sensational news story for DOGE to spin.

To whom it concerns,

Wanting to direct attention to DEI efforts in the backyard of Washington DC. In the Fall of 2024, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) announced a Comprehensive Boundary Review. The dominantly liberal School Board is currently in the process of rezoning all high schools (therefore middle and elementary schools) based on the pillars of diversity, equity and inclusion which could be detrimental to student's mental and social health, established neighborhoods, traffic patterns, real estate values, and more. This supports "One Fairfax" which immediately states "joint racial and social equity policy" on the website opening.

FCPS is one of the most prosperous counties in the USA, with many schools ranked as Top Schools in the Nation. Many of your government federal and military employees will be significantly impacted by this. The current Superintendent has brought in representation from nearly every ethnicity, lgbtq+, migrant families, neurodivergent while excluding military and special needs who would focus on academic excellence, accountability and fiscal responsibility. The pricetag of equity in FCPS is $6.4 million. https://www.fairfaxtimes.com/articles/pricetag-of-equity-in-fairfax-county-schools-6-4-million/article_6e14ee46-db8a-11ef-ba7b-4b737bdff938.html

Multiple public forums of community members are banding together against this. Please help us pivot funding and leadership efforts towards keeping communities together, raising devoted teacher salaries, supporting programs throughout, repairing older facilities, and more.

You should fact check this because claims about excluding military and special families from BRAC are demonstrably false. There are two reps from SEPTA and a rep for the Military connected family advisory group.

Oh that’s great news! Should be removed then. Was pulling from context previously mentioned.

The earlier post explicitly said the military and special ed were represented, and listed the entire list, including the 2 special ed groups and the military group.

It also included a link that listed military and special ed

Thanks! Nothing has been sent so that should be changed if the person requesting a draft does send it off.

Will the school board listen to its own party members urging more moderate policies? Or are they just going to ram these boundary changes through despite significant and vocal opposition?

I keep hearing from neighbors that Fort Hunt Elementary will be rezoned to MVHS. Where are they getting this info?

Isn't Fort Hunt a complete attendance island, like the hole in a donut?

I’ve only heard that about the Fort Hunt attendance island on the other side of Rt. 1 that, geographically, seems like it should be at Hybla Valley if they stay at WP, otherwise Mount Vernon Woods and MVHS.

Now looking at a map, if WP eventually has to take on a bunch of students currently zoned for Edison due to growth at Edison, Fort Hunt ES seems like the geographic outlier and may have to get shipped off to MVHS. But that seems like a possible eventuality, like the possibility of Forestville to Herndon. Not something that’s needed right now, and crucially there are many schools near Edison that are under capacity if students need to come out of Edison in 5-10 years due to growth.

Fort Hunt has an attendance island off Route 1 but the surrounding area as well as the main Fort Hunt area all feed to West Potomac.

The rumors about Fort Hunt moving to Mount Vernon are based on its being the closest WestPo feeder to the Mount Vernon attendance area and the under-enrollment at Mount Vernon.

On the other hand, courtesy of corrupt politicians on the School Board like Karen Corbett Sanders and incompetent former Facilities head Jeff Platenberg, West Po got an unnecessary expansion a few years ago to 3000 seats, when MV had hundreds of available seats, so West Potomac itself is not projected to be overcrowded. They talk a good equity game in that part of the county, but the reality is that they protect West Potomac while treating Mount Vernon as a pariah.

West Potomac has the capacity to pick up some Edison kids, but Sandburg does not. Lewis gets all the attention, but Mount Vernon is currently sitting at 1800 students. The transfers out has increased by 100 students in the last 2 years, with 200 students transferring to Hayfield alone.

Is there any way to get the reasons for the transfers? Fort Belvoir? AP? Foreign language?

As a FHES parent, I know we have a ton of families who lottery "for Spanish" to avoid Hollin Meadows and the schools in 22309 that eventually feed to MVHS.

The thinking is that Mount Vernon is beyond repair whereas West Po can be good if you navigate carefully.

They all fall under “Student Transfer Regulation” which covers military, AP/IB curriculum, and foreign language (as well as a few other criteria.)

I wonder if it is possible to FOIA the reasons given? That would be very interesting.

And, one needs to ask--why do people want out? Doubtful there are 200 high school kids from Belvoir. My guess would be well south of 100.

There are almost 1500 elementary aged kids between Fort Belvoir Primary and Upper ES. Half the base population is under 18.

I taught in DOD schools. The child dependent population drops dramatically when the kids reach high school. It generally drops every grade. For example, I taught in a school with 6 first grades and 3 6th grades. And, the class size of the 6th grades was lower than that of the 1st grades. And, the high school was very small. I would expect the same at Fort Belvoir.
