I can't even take credit for this idea, but it's something I heard and as I think about it, it seems just crazy enough to work.
What if Deal and Hardy were merged into one school, with two grades at the Deal campus and one at the Hardy campus? The attendance boundaries would be everyone who is in-boundary for Wilson, so everyone feeding Wilson would have the same middle school experience. There's something for everyone: * For Deal families, it would alleviate crowding. * For Hardy families, it would be "Alice Deal for All," in the memorable words of our mayor. * For out-of-boundary families, it would mean more slots. So what's the downside? |
| How does this create more slots for OOB families? |
| Electives aren't typically limited to one grade. |
|
Deal family here.
No thank you. |
You really think that Deal is all that and a bag of chips? You have no idea! |
| No. Way too big and way less convenient. Very disruptive for the kids. |
| My school district did something similar where/when I was growing up. All (or most) of the 6th graders in the district went to the same school. Middle school was 7th and 8th. |
| is this the sixth grade incubator idea? |
Paranoid much? My kids walk to Deal. I like that. I DO like Deal and chips.
|
| The problem is geography. A large number of Deal students live within walking distance to the school. My house is about 1/3 of a mile from Deal and getting to Hardy would be a huge pain in the ass. |
| If the merger resulted in the retirement of the Hardy old guard (the protectors of Hardy's 'unique DC culture'), then I would be all in favor. Overlay Deal standards and quality on Hardy's smaller school environment and that would be one heck of a school. |
| What is the Hardy "old guard"? Is this anything like the Roosevelt or Dunbar or Coolidge "old guard"? |
| How will athletics and clubs be addressed? Bus from Hardy to Deal? |
It makes it more difficult for OOB families. That makes it politically untenable. So, the downside is political unpopularity on a citywide basis. |
| Just hang a new sign on Hardy that says "Alice Deal 2" and call it a day. |
