fenty kids to lafayette?

Anonymous
from city paper:

Harry Jaffe with a lightly sourced scoop: ‘Chatter around town has it that Mayor Adrian Fenty and his wife Michelle have decided to send their twin sons to public school in the fall….West Elementary is the Fenty’s neighborhood school, but the school off 16th Street in Upper Northwest has been in turmoil. Michelle Fenty toured five grade schools — Janney, Murch, Key, Eaton and Lafayette — across Rock Creek Park. Each had a shot. My sources tell me the twins will attend Lafayette.’

Would any of the West parents care to weigh in on the alleged "turmoil" at West?

Fenty was on the Kojo Nmadi show at noon, and he was specifically asked about this report. He stated that his boys would be attending public school, but refused to give any more specifics (i.e., which school, or whether they went through the lottery process to be admitted), asking for privacy for his children.

Since he has confirmed that he will be sending his children to DCPS, I would hope that people would honor his request.

If you are on the wait list for Lafayette and wondering if the two Fenty boys just jumped over you, Fenty's request may not carry a lot of weight.

i'm not sure it's a privacy issue, to be honest. i certainly think it is a matter of public interest which public school the mayor chose for his children and which route he took to get them in.

as a dcps parent, i would like to know.

ah, don't you know that when you are a politician you never play by the same rules as everyone else. my child was on the waitlist for lafyette, eaton and hearst. never moved off the list. so, i would venture he jumped over my baby to take the two slots. saying that, i am glad to see that he is at least honoring his campaign commitment of two years past, and finally placing his children in dcps or charter.

Fenty could have explained the process (which sounds lilke a late decision out of boundary, since the deadline was in March or thereabouts) and maintained privacy by not identifying the school.

I'm sure it will be publicly known in due time whether or not it's Lafayette.

I think this all depends on what grade your child is in and whether there were openings in that particular grade. Aren't his boys going into 3rd grade? I have heard that out of bounds slots start to open in 3rd grade in many upper NW elementary schols b/c of the kids that move to private.

Because of the economy I am guessing that most folks are putting off the decision to go private these days - this doesn't matter for Lafayette it has been packed to the gills for awhile and is adding classes this year.

I don't think the process of how he gets in much matters. I think he should have his pick of public school - just glad that he is choosing to send his sons to dcps.

I personally think the Education Mayor's kids should go in-boundary. If not, go through the lottery fairly, or apply to charter like everyone's else....

Amen to that! If he wanted privacy, he should never have said anything at all about his kids in the first place. I would have more respect for if he just came out and said "my wife wants them to go to private school and she didn't run for mayor, so I won't play politics with my kids". Sending your kids to DCPS but only if you can cherry pick out of bounds sends absolutely the wrong message and is even more hypocritical than private. Hopefully the kids are happy wherever they go.

I don't care where Fenty sends his children to school. It's none of my business.

But, if he continues to send his children to a private school that offers wonderful educational opportunities, it would help us all if he would share what these opportunities consist of, and think about how we could offer the same quality programs to all DCPS students, regardless of what neighborhood they live in.

Fenty's kids are going to the fourth grade. I think he should have the pick of the schools of his choosing. I hope that the media and even this list will be gracious to his kids when the news hits about their selection.

Can you tell me why he should have his pick of all the schools? It is not as if he is living in a mayoral residence and so he had no choice of where to live. He is Mayor of a city where there are stark differences in the public schools available to all. He has cast himself as the education mayor, the one who is going to fix up the public schools for all. Why does he get special treatment, meaning the school of his choice without having to go through the same hoops all other parents in the city have to go through whether it is a lottery or real estate choice?

Hmm Fenty was in fender bender right by Lafayette this weekend according to the Post.
