| We happened to be driving past Shrevewood ES last night and the kids asked if we could stop and play at the playground. I was surprised to see a sign saying it was only for use by enrolled students during school hours. The playground at our elementary has no such policy and we go there all the time. Is this true at other schools as well? Anyone know the reasoning for this policy? Why some schools and not others? |
| Maybe the sign meant that only enrolled students could use the playground during school hours but anyone can use the playground at other times? That's the policy at our school. |
| You misunderstood the sign. It means that during school hours, the playground can only be used by students. A mom cannot bring her toddler there to play, nor can a bunch of grown men play basketball during school hours. After school, it's open for anyone to play until sunset. |

And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do" So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!" Whoa-oh-oh Sign, sign, everywhere a sign Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign? And the sign said anybody caught trespassin' would be shot on sight So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house "Hey! What gives you the right?" "To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in" "If God was here he'd tell you to your face, man, you're some kinda sinner" Sign, sign, everywhere a sign Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign? Now, hey you, mister, can't you read? You've got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat You can't even watch, no you can't eat You ain't supposed to be here The sign said you got to have a membership card to get inside Ugh! And the sign said, "Everybody welcome. Come in, kneel down and pray" But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all I didn't have a penny to pay So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine" Wooo! Sign, sign, everywhere a sign Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign? This-though I agree that the signs are ambiguous. I was puzzled too the first time I read the one at our local school. |
| School hours are around 8 am to 3 pm at most elementary schools. The playground is only to be used during those hours. How is this ambiguous? |
| Teacher here. There are legal issues here. What if your child were to get seriously injured? The school may be liable. |
Read the original post. |
| That blows. I thought schools were like parks. They are both run by the county. I think they put those signs up so the cops can get teens for trespassing if they want to. |
| I have seen these signs--not at that school. And ignored them. Just because my 3yo isn't in school doesn't mean they can't use a public facility. We used to go to our school park all the time when she was that age. |
Then that would be true at every FCPS school, not just selected ones. Why the inconsistency? |
|
Your misreading the sign. It should be read as
During school hours, the playground equipment may only be used by enrolled students. FCPS specifically states that playgrounds may be used by individuals free of charge outside of school hours- https://www.fcps.edu/community-use-availability-and-fees |
It's crazy to take a 3 year old to a school playground in the middle of a school day. Why not just take them into the classroom, too? Since the rules don't apply to you. |
Pharrell Williams? The song "Signs" above was written in 1970 by Les Emmerson of Five Man Electrical Band. |
I was just about to post the same thing. Pharrell. Haha. |
