New bike lane on Old Georgetown Rd in Bethesda

E-bikes are allowed in bike lanes. Mopeds and motor scooters are also allowed in bike lanes. Mopeds and motor scooters may not be operated at a speed in excess of 30 miles per hour. Mopeds and motor scooters must be titled and insured, and riders must wear helmets and eye protection.

Sweet. 30mph is all I need.

30 mph is the maximum legal speed, not the expected average speed.

Yes, if 30 is the maximum legal speed, it’s safe to assume that most traffic will be doing a *minimum* of 30. Because 30 is unrealistically slow for a road of that configuration - especially when 25 is the maximum speed for right single lane neighborhood streets with cars parked two feet to either side.

What’s your point? That the speed limit should instead be 10mph, because the average speed will be 25?

How about 5mph? Or 2? Why not?

This is about mopeds. Specifically,

1. You're allowed to use a moped in a bike lane
2. The maximum legal speed for a moped is 30 mph

Have you considered getting a moped to ride in the bike lanes in Old Georgetown Road, so that you don't have to potentially sit in traffic with other people in cars?

Can someone please post the link for the petition to support the bike lanes? I’m a county resident and I have zero idea where one would find such a thing.

Here is the petition to support the bike lanes: https://www.change.org/p/support-the-sha-redesign-of-old-georgetown-road?redirect=false

Thanks. I just signed it. Can't wait to get my bike out so I can cycle to the YMCA. Means one less car on the road if I can cycle.

There was already an established bike lane to the YMCA on Old Georgetown Rd. Thank for playing but you seem to like to like to keep lying.

And it ended south of the Beltway. Now it goes all the way to Pike and Rose. More connectivity. Hooray!

It does not now go “all the way to Pike & Rose”. Thanks for playing.

North of Nicholson, the bike lanes on Old Georgetown Road are part of the county's White Flint Western Workaround project. https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/dot-dte/Resources/Images/WhiteFlintWw_AerialMap.jpg

So you admit to lying. They do not go to Pike & Rose.

Click on the link.

You said “now”. There are no bike lanes to Pike and Rose now. So you’re just making it up because you don’t live here and think an online document is equivalent to the real world.

Some eBikes can do 35mph in stock form, and up to 50+ mph when modified with performance parts. Who needs a moped? Just get a hot rod eBike and run the bike lane at 50mph. Be the fastest thing on OGR by a 20 mph margin.

Those aren't legal.

(a) "Electric bicycle" means a vehicle that:
(1) Is designed to be operated by human power with the assistance of an electric motor;
(2) Is equipped with fully operable pedals;
(3) Has two or three wheels;
(4) Has a motor with a rating of 750 watts or less; and
(5) Meets one of the requirements of subsection (b) of this section.
(b)
(1) A Class 1 electric bicycle is equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of 20 miles per hour.
(2) A Class 2 electric bicycle is equipped with a motor that provides assistance whether or not the rider is pedaling the bicycle and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of 20 miles per hour.
(3) A Class 3 electric bicycle is equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches a speed of 28 miles per hour.

Can someone please post the link for the petition to support the bike lanes? I’m a county resident and I have zero idea where one would find such a thing.

Are you a Bethesda resident? Seems like nearly everyone signing in support don’t actually live in Bethesda. If you Silver Spring or Wheaton, like almost all of the “county residents” that have signed the petition then why aren’t you making a petition for bike lanes in your community?

Yes, I live in the Wyngate neighborhood off OGR.

And here is the link for Bethesda residents.
https://www.change.org/p/remove-the-catastrophically-dangerous-bike-lanes-on-old-georgetown-road-in-bethesda-md

That is the link for drivers who are upset that they only get 4 lanes instead of 6 now.

It is the link for Bethesda residents. The other link is for performative Silver Spring, Wheaton, DC and VA residents.

There is one (maybe more?) poster who is insistent that no one who lives in bethesda supports the bike lanes and keeps insisting those of us posting from those neighborhoods in support of the bike lanes are liars who don’t actually live here. It’s really odd of them to be so insistent on this point.

The whole thing is weird anyway. People who live in downtown Silver Spring or Wheaton or anywhere else in Montgomery County don't need a passport and visa to come to Bethesda and drive or ride or walk on Old Georgetown Road. Plus some of the most vociferous posters on that epic NextDoor thread about the evils of the bike lanes also don't live in Bethesda.

The question is why do you have more of an interest in what goes on in Bethesda instead of right outside your door? It’s a bit odd to be sooo fixated on Bethesda when Aspen Hill is significantly closer to Silver Spring and Wheaton and I see zero advocacy about the primarily people of color who have been dying in “traffic violence” there.

Bike lanes are on top right of that twitter photo. On both sides of the street
Also, the county reconnected Old Georgetown Road to Executive St and reopened that connection which has been closed to driving through since around 1989.

On this google maps photo the bike lanes arent' there, but I was there yesterday riding my bike on the bike lanes that are now on Executive drive.
MD gov did a great thing. Makes biking to Pike and Rose safe.

Where’s the flex posts? These are not protected bike lanes yet. The claim is that they are there now, which is a lie. Thanks for playing.
