Bethune Lottery 2017

Anonymous
I haven't received a lottery number via email or snail mail from Bethune. I called today and the woman that answered said she'd have someone call me tomorrow morning. If you applied for Bethune's lottery, how did you receive your number? Or have they decided to use a different system this year, like LAMB? I applied well before the deadline and received a confirmation from SchoolMint. Did you receive another confirmation from the school? TIA.

I thought they were also releasing results on the 31st?

Don't get your hopes too high about the efficiency and accuracy of Bethunes Administration

I just went back to their website and this PDF says the lottery is tomorrow.

This one explains the assigned lottery number.

"Each applicant is assigned a number known only to his/her family and the staff of Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy PCS. This number is mailed to families and is also available from staff on the day of the lottery."

But now their admissions page says, "Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy is a free public school open to all residents of the District of Columbia. Spaces are limited and applicants will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis."

http://www.mmbethune.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=410321&type=d&pREC_ID=895315

I am 99% sure that was not the case when I applied. Are they able to change how they lottery in the middle of the lottery process?

I applied well after the lottery was over. It was probably may or June. I never recieved a waitlist number but I could see on the website there were more than 70 people ahead of me. One day in early Aug. the school emailed me and told me to bring in my enrollment paperwork. I've heard that everyone eventually gets into Bethune and in my case it was true.

PP, did you enroll? If so, how has it been.

The first come, first served statement is really odd. It should be a lottery, just like LAMBs lottery.

I thought it was a few days before myschooldc would publish results but can't find that confirmed anywhere now.

Bethune has always just kind of applied their own lottery rules. Fudge birth deadlines, etc. Why DCPCSB doesn't take this seriously is beyond me

Does anyone bother to report them?

It was really a s&^%show last year. Why don't they do My School DC?

I tried. They apparently can fudge the birth date thing if it's not in their charter, which its not, I checked. Why they? bother publishing a cut off date is beyond me since they'll take anyone.

Because then they wouldn't be able to fill their seats with younger kids and non residents.

Why doesn't the Charter school board care about this? The test scores are pretty miserable too

So, has anyone else out there applied and received a number for their lottery today?

If they are going to accept everyone (ie, if they didn't get enough applicants to require a waitlist) in a given grade, they don't need to run a lottery and wouldn't need to assign numbers. Maybe that's what happened?

But yes, if you're someone who applied to Bethune I would definitely contact the DCPCSB about this. Email dcpublic@dcpcsb.org or just call them--I couldn't tell from http://www.dcpcsb.org/accreditation/dc-pcsb-staff but it seems Melodi Sampson is the one in charge of enrollment.
