How do you know they're upper class? |
I'm assuming she's talking about 3rd-8th graders. |
If the kids are older, they must be going to the Brookland campus. 16th street serves only younger kids (this year PreK and K but I think maybe 1st starting this coming year). |
Yes, the older kids at the Brookland campus. Do they bus older kids from 16th? |
| Are people happy at Bethune? How good is the Spanish instruction? It's the physically closest of our options for Pk3. |
Lots of posts about Bethune - here's a long, recent thread http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/629817.page |
HA! |
Though, to be fair, there were only a few post from current families and then the one poster that would only say things like "please god, NO, pray at the altar for anything BUT ..." |
| I can only speak to the 16th St campus, but our experience has been very positive. It's an intimate school, one class per grade with roughly 12-18 students a class, and every kid gets a lot of individual attention. Teaching happens in small groups and teachers teach to each child's abilities as a result. Calm, supportive, warm environment. Everyone knows each other -- kids, students, administrators, parents. We're returning for another year. |
| We just gave up our #1 spot on the waitlist because we got into LAMB, but otherwise would have been happy going here for PK3, if solely for the Spanish immersion program and location (16th street). |
| Does anyone know why the PK3 wait list for the Brookland campus appears to have stalled? For the last 2 weeks or so, there doesn't appear to have been any movement, while the 16th St campus has had some movement. |
| Are any of the PPs who say they are considering the 16th St location for PK3 IB for West? We got matched with West and enrolled our kiddo, but see that the Bethune WL is moving like crazy and expect we'll get an offer. My husband is a native Spanish speaker and the immersion would be great for a year or two while we see how our lottery chances play out the next couple of years and/or enroll at West for K. So I guess the question really is -- Bethune or West for a PK3 if immersion is important? |
| Bethune's Spanish program isn't really immersion, not in the way its come to be expected anyway. I toured West and loved it. If I could choose between the two, it would be West hands down. Their Pre-K facilities are amazing and they have lovely caring teachers and very strong community. I definitely would have taken the spot if offered. Good luck with your decision. |
I guess it depends on your priorities. We're also one parent native Spanish speaking, and choose West over language immersion. There are other ways we're reinforcing Spanish, and we like the school otherwise. |
| Thanks very much to the last two posters. This is just the kind of feedback I was looking for. |
