Wooton or QO

Anonymous
D.C. will be in kindergarten in 2 years and we are purposely moving for better schools. Between price and location (distance to my work) we are looking at houses that mostly fall into QO with a few to Wooton. (Note: our budget doesn't work for WJ,Churchill etc).

We are between two houses - a tiny house districted to the Wooton Cluster (Travailah Elem) and a more standard size house districted to QO cluster (Thurgood Marshall Elm). Same price, same level of work needed. Obviously we have over 10 yrs til HS. Which would you choose Wooton or QO?

tell me about pros /cons

QO

wootton has too many social issues. Cut throat environment, rich kids with lots of drugs, intense non-welcoming environment

Try to make your middle school lakelands if ou can.

Depends on what is important to you education wise..

You will get the same education at both schools. Just less of a competitive atmosphere at QO.

Also QO has better school spirit and diversity.

If education is really important to you and your family, Wootton for sure. If you want your kid to have more relaxed HS experience, QO is fine. Soul searching time. No free lunch in life.

+1 The is how I would sum it up too. We went with Wootton. My kids are super high achievers, school comes easily to them and it has been a good fit. If you are more relaxed, QO may be a better environment for you. You may not know yet as your child is young...

So what is a laid back family with high achieving kids to do?

Go to QO and create a strong schedule or do a signature program.

Wootton is not a better environment for high achievers, it is toxic.

You high achieving child will be just as high achieving at QO but a little bit kinder and well rounded.

Wootton parents won't admit how toxic the school is because their house value will suffer.

You match kid's ability/drive with what school offers. So, for high performing kids, match them with high performing schools.

If having more high performing kids means it's toxic, then PP is right.

Is there a choice C?

In Wootton cluster now. Travilah is a great elementary. But Wootton has a lot of issues. We are moving to either QO or Northwest.

No having a high achieving child is not toxic.

Shaming him at every misstep is toxic. Comparing him to his peers is toxic. Talking to other moms about each others grades to compare and ensure you are "the best" is toxic. Not allowing extra curriculars because they take away from study time is toxic. Creating a schedule too strong for your child and making them so 4+ hours of homework with little sleep is toxic. Trying to keep up with the Lees is toxic.

Northwest has the Ulysees program and a STEM program.

Seneca is rebuilding and Northwest is a little over enrolled right now but in 3 years it will be better.
