Beach house close to DC

Anonymous
I have 3 elementary age kids and we live in NOVA. I would like to forgo camps this summer and rent a nice beach house for 2-4 weeks. Something not too far away so DH can come for the weekends. I've never do me anything like this before but I want sand, swimming, lazy relaxed days and some mini golf and ice cream on the side. Any ideas!? I know nothing around here!

DE beaches are 2.5-3 hours (traffic depending).

Depends on where around the beltway.

OP said she wants her husband to visit in weekends I think OBX would be easier on Thursday or Friday night than dealing with the bay bridge and traffic lights, intersections all the way out to the MD DE beaches.

OP, can your husband travel on off days/times? There is NO BEACH he wants to drive to at 2pm on a Friday.

OBX is way too far. I like it there but it's a 5 hour drive in the middle of the night.

Not really, from fairfax, OBX is only about 45 to hour further than Bethany or Rehobeth.

Chesapeake Beach and North Beach. If you just want a place to get away from things. It's not the ocean and the Bay isn't actually the nicest place to swim, but if you just want to get out of DC its an option. Beaches are small but there is sand if you want to get a tan or a waterpark to send the kids.

270 miles vs 142 miles (Reston to Kitty Hawk and Reston to Lewes, DE.) 132 miles further.

Sure, and it never takes me four hours from Richmond to DC on a summer Sunday.

Hop on a plane to Fl. Beaches around here suck.

OP said for the weekends. If her DH leaves early Saturday morning he would be there in the 2.5-3 hours timeframe resulting in a more enjoyable weekend. Leaving Friday evening from DC going anywhere would take forever, he would only get there in time to go to sleep anyways. I'd have DH sleep in his bed, get up a bit early and join the family first thing Saturday morning while traffic is very light.

I would look around in Chesapeake Beach or in some of the communities in Annapolis (before the Bay Bridge). In fact, your dh could commute various days out of the week to join you since the drive would be an hour or less. Growing up, we had a summer place off the Chesapeake and my dad would come mid week.

We've got another one here trying to rationalize their decision to buy a beach house nearly 300 miles from their home -- when they would have preferred to buy in close-in Delaware but couldn't afford it.
