OBX is way too far. I like it there but it's a 5 hour drive in the middle of the night.

Not really, from fairfax, OBX is only about 45 to hour further than Bethany or Rehobeth.

If you leave at 5am maybe!!

We've got another one here trying to rationalize their decision to buy a beach house nearly 300 miles from their home -- when they would have preferred to buy in close-in Delaware but couldn't afford it.

NP here. OBX sux - it is way further than people claim it is. But I don't think a Sea Colony condo is exactly living large.

This. I don't think OBX sucks the way much of DCUM does, but I also don't see the draw of Delaware beyond proximity. For my money, NE in August is where it's at. In June, I would go south, because I hate super cold water.

OP, I would do Martha's Vineyard and have DH fly direct from DCA every weekend.

+1. The hatred for OBX on here Is funny, I don't understand why.

You can also fly direct from DCA to ORF and catch a shuttle to OBX or just leave car at airport. Only about an hour 110-130 to most of OBX.

Coming for the weekend is the rub.

If it is too far no one will come. Going out on a limb here but look at the Northern Neck of VA. Lots of quaint little towns. You may not get mini golf but you will get beaches (not ocean), sand, lazy days, berry picking, Ferry Farm, eagle spotting, ice cream, parks and NO BAY BRIDGE.

Plus it is cheap. We do it every summer. For the whole summer.
