Does mcps ever offer any math acceleration for kindergarten-3rd grade kids who are super advanced

With curriculum 2.0, does every single es kid that is advanced in math need to wait for compacted math or the gifted center for any acceleration? Are there or have there ever been any exceptions? What if your kindergarter is scoring on the 4th grade level for the map-testing? Are they SOL?

nothing. when your kid is in 4th they can do 4/5 math. you probably know this.

Nothing, you have to do it at home. MCPS math early on is very slow.

Some schools seem to offer some differentiation

Our school offered differentiation, beginning in 1st. Based on MAP-M tests, kids were placed on an advanced group with more challenging assignments.

The past two years, there have been a handful of kids who have come in 1 year accelerated to Takoma. They all seem to come from the Bethesda area. So, there is a "bucking" of the system happening for a select few.

We are in a Bethesda school and they offer differentian starting in 1st. My DD is in 1st and there seems to be two groups. I vaguely recall my DS, who is now in 4th, had more groupsbuti could be getting that confused with 2nd and 3rd grade.

By differentiation, do you mean that the kids are not only grouped by ability but also access work that is accelerated beyond their grade level? Can you say which elementary schools this is offered at? Is it worth it for me to try to lobby for more for my kid at his school ?

Look into Jhu cty for online options outside of school

Differentiation, as I'm finding out with my child, does not mean acceleration. DD is in 2nd grade and is willing and able to study multiplication/division, but it's above her current grade level and the teacher is not willing to teach the next grade's material. Maybe it's school policy, I don't know, but our option, at this point, is to supplement at home.

At school DD is offered more challenging assignments, but they're still within the second grade curriculum.

In our experience, there has been no acceleration beyond grade level, at least through 3rd grade. We haven't dealt with compact math 4/5 yet.

My kid is in 3rd grade and has always scored really well on the MAP testing. There has been no acceleration at all. We are hoping it gets better in 4th. For now we supplement at home.

There is no time for acceleration because teachers spend an awful amount of time on learning basic math. It's an excruciatingly slow and process for my 2nd grade DS.

Nothing - Zilch - Nada

2nd grader JUST learned freaking coins and adding them to $1.00. She did that in preschool when they had pretend stores with play money for a week. That is how slow they are going.

Thank all the illegals in our county that are barely scraping by not even knowing English. They have dumbed down the elementary education.

My older daughter who is a sophomore? She was in tracked math classes. Moved to Math 2 in 1st and was in Math 7 by 5th. Took Algebra 1 in 6th and is currently in AP Calc as a sophomore. I will be lucky if my youngest is in Algebra 2 by sophomore year at this rate.
