Our school offered differentiation, beginning in 1st. Based on MAP-M tests, kids were placed on an advanced group with more challenging assignments.
Differentiation, as I'm finding out with my child, does not mean acceleration. DD is in 2nd grade and is willing and able to study multiplication/division, but it's above her current grade level and the teacher is not willing to teach the next grade's material. Maybe it's school policy, I don't know, but our option, at this point, is to supplement at home. At school DD is offered more challenging assignments, but they're still within the second grade curriculum.
