Would you pay your kids tuition?

Anonymous
My first twin got accepted in Harvard and my second got accepted in Yale and MIT
however being the cheapskate that I am, and wanting to teach them the value of the dollar am against paying for their education. And yes they are plenty spoiled and never have worked in their life. I could pay for both of their education today with cash but not sure if I should do it or not. What do you all think? I am leaning towards them getting a loan for their schools.

I personally think I would pay tuition and rooms and board and have them get a summer job if they want spending money.

Congratulations! Great schools.

I would pay tuition, but let them work to contribute to other expenses. I'd tell them that grad school is on them.

I would absolutely pay, if I had the means. Being free from student debt is an incredible advantage. If you like, you can require that they pay you back at some point...that will still be better for them than taking out loans.

Or you could set up a loan on your own? I wish my money made 6% interest like we paid on our student loans.

I believe I will make my kids take small loans, but would pay the rest out right. They need to have a career plan though for their major and they need to make the grades too.

I would have them take out loans and then if they do well surprise them by paying them off as a graduation present. That way they'll have some skin in the game and actually value their education but not start out in life with unnecessary (you said you can pay for it) student loan debt.

I think you can be proud of your children and I would pay for their education if you have the means. Look, if you made only 150k a year or less they would have gotten a full ride according to the schools financial aid info. Don't punish them because you are well off. I say celebrate, and hopefully they are not only smart but also decent people.

Pay for the one you love more.

I would pay for some of it and make them pay some of it as well so they know what's at stake. After they graduate if they have any outstanding loans I would be happy to pay it off for them if I have the means.

Pay for it since you can with no issues. College costs are so much higher relative to our day that it's not practical for a kid to pay for an expensive private college him/herself. Work study and summer work will barely cover the meal plan. And the fact that you have high income means that they won't qualify for financial aid so it seems unfair to then stick them with the bill. Where do you expect them to get $250,000 of loans anyway?

Frankly you should have had this conversation before they applied to college. If you plan to go through with it I hope they've also applied to a state school, or lesser schools where they could qualify for merit aid, or have the option of deferring and maybe emancipating so they can claim financial aid going forward.

I would pay, and have them work summers if they want "extras."

Of course.

I wouldn't hesitate to pay tuition.

Why do you associate parents paying college tuition with students/young adults not learning the value of a dollar?

Just admit you don't want to pay. The truth will set you free.

Yes of course you should pay. Agree with the idea of a small job to pay for extras.

You already failed to teach them the value of a dollar by spoiling them and having them never work.

Pulling an a**hole move like refusing to pay for tuition would just be icing on the cake.
