any bank employees here? question about cashing check from wife in abusive relationship

Anonymous
I know this is probably a strange question, but if I cash a check (not deposit, just bring into our bank and get cash), will it show up on our bank statement, or will my husband get any sort of notification that I cashed a check on our joint account? Could he see it if he's looking at our online account? He uses Mint and gets real time notifications of all finance related things.

I know it's a crazy question, but I'm in an abusive marriage and I'm not allowed to have any money other than what he decides to give me in cash, although I am joint on our bank account. I have been selling some stuff to save up my own emergency/leave money, and I sold something to a co-worker who gave me a check, and I'd like to cash the check and stash the money, but I CAN NOT take ANY chance that my husband would find out that I cashed a check at our bank.

Please help. Does anyone know the answer?

I honestly don't know the answer. But which bank is the check from? If your coworker wrote you a check on a Citibank account, can you go in there to cash it even though you don't have an account there? Call them before you go to make sure they'll cash it for you, but I believe they should.

Next time you sell items, ask for cash!

And if you were my coworker and told me why you wanted it in cash, I'd pay you double and give you some grocery cards.

Hugs to you, OP.

Go to the bank that the check is from. Hopefully its a different bank than yours. You would be in the clear in that case.

Did the check come from a local bank? If so, you can go to that bank and have your check cashed using your ID. Another option is to use one of those check cashing places but they do charge a small fee.

It's been years since DH and I worked at a bank but when we did, cashing a check that was not against your own account would not show up on your account. The only time it would show up would be if you wrote a check to yourself for cash.

No it won't show because it won't come from your account, it comes from your co worker's account.

I think Walmart charges people $3 to cash a check. No mention of a bank account required.

This is a good option!

I wouldn't risk it. They may deposit it first and then cash it out. I would go to a different bank, or another place that cashes checks (Walmart, etc) and just pay the small fee. Please reach out to someone for help.

At Bank of America whenever I cash a check for just cash it does not show up on our statement even when I'm doing other transactions at the same time that do.

Can you take the check to the bank of your co-worker?

Go to the bank that issued the check. It then won't be connected to your account.

What I mean is, if your co--worker uses Bank of America, and that's the bank on the check, go into a Bank of America and cash the check there.

Flip the check over, endorse it, and write "pay to the order of [name a friend you trust]". Give the check to that person, and have her cash it through her account for you.

I didn't have a bank account when I got my first job (in HS), so I would sign my paycheck over to my boyfriend, and he would cash them for me, until my mom could find time during banking hours to take me to open my own account.

Sorry, it's been 20 years: you wrote "pay to the order of Larla Jones" then sign.
