Kids cross George Mason every day with a crossing guard to get to Barrett. Most of the school's walkers, in fact. That intersection where they cross (Henderson) is also a busy street as it connects Quincy to Route 50. If elementary kids can cross there with a guard they can cross anywhere.

Sounds like it would be pretty easy to make Kirkwood crossable for ASFS. But in Arlington white kids get buses while minorities must cross busy streets?

It would be very easy to cross Kirkwood with a guard. But many of those walkers are also complaining because they then have to walk up either a longish flight of stairs or a steep one block hill. It’s ridiculous.

Not really. You need to build a pedestrian bridge or use eminent domain to make a sidewalk. All the people who say it’s crossable by young children either have not crossed it in the past ten years or live in Cherrydale and are pushing an agenda.
George mason over by ats or wash blvd by wash lee are probably good comparisons for kirkwood. I’m sure people jay walk across those streets all the time too. But I probably wouldn’t do it unless there was a street light, which there isn’t on kirkwood.

So the current ASFS kids will be bused down to Barcroft? That doesn't seem to help with the transportation costs.

APS can’t build pedestrian bridges or install sidewalks, that’s the county’s domain.

I fail to understand the need to make any of these changes.

Absolutely not BS. It’s in this thread for at least 2 pages. Just search Kirkwood.

Arlingtonians are so silly. I just walked up and down the stairs and they are not bad at all. Larlas need to get out of their sheltered life. People will figure it out or go around. If the burden is high we can provide 'courtesy' busing.

You mean the people with the stroller? Yeah, that's a bitch to have to get a stroller up that hill.

1) I do live in Cherrydale.

2) My kids are now in middle or high school now so I could care less what happens to ASFS. But they did attend ASFS and often crossed Kirkwood on their own or with friends after school to go to their friends houses in Lyon Village by the time they were in 4th grade.

3) I walk the same way twice a day to go to the metro.

4) Kirkwood would be absolutely crossable for ES kids with a crossing guard.

5) George Mason by ATS or Washington Blvd by WL are not good comparisons. No way does Kirkwood get as much traffic and certainly much less than George Mason where the Barrett kids cross with a guard.

6) A pedestrian bridge??? I bet you dont let your kids play on swings or in the backyard by themselves either.

Make the current ASFS building a neighborhood school

Keep Key immersion.

End the ATS program when the current principal retires

So the current ASFS kids will be bused down to Barcroft? That doesn't seem to help with the transportation costs.

No, the current ASFS students go to whatever their neighborhood school becomes. Current Barcroft students get the ASFS program. Current ASFS parents who are irrationally enamored with the science focus can move.

This makes no sense at all. ASFS is not a program. Why would you move a non-program into any school? I say this as a Barcrdot resident (but kids are not at Barcroft).

ASFS is not a choice program. It’s not moving, with the possible exception of moving the equipment to Key for continuity of curriculum if the immersion program moves to the ASFS site. If they both become neighborhood schools, the equipment will stay where it is. This whole process will be expensive enough for APS, they do not have piles of money laying around for gratuitous changes.

Their neighborhood school is ASFS. Key is closer but you recommend keeping it Immersion. Where would these 700 kids go?
