Kids cross George Mason every day with a crossing guard to get to Barrett. Most of the school's walkers, in fact. That intersection where they cross (Henderson) is also a busy street as it connects Quincy to Route 50. If elementary kids can cross there with a guard they can cross anywhere.
Sounds like it would be pretty easy to make Kirkwood crossable for ASFS. But in Arlington white kids get buses while minorities must cross busy streets?
Not really. You need to build a pedestrian bridge or use eminent domain to make a sidewalk. All the people who say it’s crossable by young children either have not crossed it in the past ten years or live in Cherrydale and are pushing an agenda. George mason over by ats or wash blvd by wash lee are probably good comparisons for kirkwood. I’m sure people jay walk across those streets all the time too. But I probably wouldn’t do it unless there was a street light, which there isn’t on kirkwood.
1) I do live in Cherrydale. 2) My kids are now in middle or high school now so I could care less what happens to ASFS. But they did attend ASFS and often crossed Kirkwood on their own or with friends after school to go to their friends houses in Lyon Village by the time they were in 4th grade. 3) I walk the same way twice a day to go to the metro. 4) Kirkwood would be absolutely crossable for ES kids with a crossing guard. 5) George Mason by ATS or Washington Blvd by WL are not good comparisons. No way does Kirkwood get as much traffic and certainly much less than George Mason where the Barrett kids cross with a guard. 6) A pedestrian bridge??? I bet you dont let your kids play on swings or in the backyard by themselves either.
