immune issues- eliminating gluten, or doing anti-inflmattory diet to lower NK cells, TNF alpha

Anonymous
Has anyone changed their diet dramatically- eliminated gluten and/or dairy/soy and lowered NK cells, inflammation, TNF alpha? Does it make a difference? Anyone see results? What was diagnosis they changed and what happened?

I did the Auto-immune Paleo protocol for a solid month before my one successful immune protocol. I was dairy and gluten free for my pregnancy. I did it and don't regret it because it was a success, but it sucked!

What is the auto immune paleo protocol?

Is it too late to start at beginning of FET?

I have immune issues and I have decided not to pursue immune treatments. I have modified my diet on my own and still am TTC, hoping this will work. I have eliminated dairy and sugar so far. Gluten is harder but am decreasing gluten too. No success yet, but I'm also not going to spend the money to have a second full immune panel drawn. My first Beers blood test results were horrible.

What do you mean horrible? and why would you need a second immune panel?

How do you eliminate sugar? like added sugar? why dairy?

PP here. By horrible I mean that every test was abnormal/high, most extremely high.

I cut out sugar by not buying sweets/treats. I cut out dairy due to the inflammatory aspects of dairy.

If you're going to try it, I'd go all in personally and do the AIP diet or AIP Paleo, as mentioned above by a PP. Google it, lots of information...

PP who talked about AIP paleo--yes, Google it. A number of IF women have done it. I have always had issues and it made a difference in how I felt.

Sorry-hit enter too soon. If it were the start of an FET, I would cut gluten and dairy and not do the AIP paleo unless it failed. Cutting gluten--and I mean, be crazy about...look for cross contamination etc--makes a huge difference!

It does take months for these diets to have any effect on inflammation fyi

If you are doing the diet modifications I think you should also consider anti-inflammatory supplements and/or other natural treatments. Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) has been shown in studies (search pub med) to be as effective as prednisone for lowering TNF-a. One person I know tried it in combo with other immune treatments and had success.

OP here: I was reading about the auto immune paleo diet, and that seems too strict for me. I have to be able to live my life, and I am not going to make it so I can’t socialize, go out to dinner, eat with my husband etc. by doing something THAT restrictive. I want another kid, but this is a marathon, not a sprint, and to make myself that much even more miserable? I do want to try eliminating gluten and dairy though. But that AIP Paleo basically leaves nothing you can actually eat

Ah....I didn't have any kids when I went on it. The thought of not ever being a mother is pretty awesome motivation. That said--I did socialize while on it and my friends were awesome! Everyone was super supportive and helped me find ways to go out. In fact, when I started adding foodstuff back in but was still dairy and gluten free, the items I would bring to parties would be totally gone and complimented. But yes, if I had had a child and we're already a parent, I probably would not have done it. Now that I have my IVF science miracle, I will probably go gluten and dairy free a few months before my next FET.

OP here: did you tell all your friends you were doing it to try to get pregnant? I feel like I would owe people an explanation for why my diet is so restrictive, and I feel like I don't want everyone to know we're trying

Yes! My DH and I told our friends we were infertile and pursuing infertility treatments and they were wonderful. We were very open because you never know what people are going through. We also wanted to remove stigma of infertility. I found our biggest cheerleaders were our friends who never want children, which kind of surprised me. One of my professional mentors cried when we finally had success. But it was also nice because everyone gave me a pass when my estrogen was over 4,000 and the crazy things hormones do to you. The treatments are legit crazy.
