Since this forum doesn't seem to shy away from the poop talk, I figured I would ask for some help!
About a week and a half ago I started having a lot of trouble having a bowel movement so I saw my OB/gyn. They told me to do colace and miralax. I've been on this regimen for about a week and a half and I'm still really struggling. I gave myself an enema last night with the OK of my regular doc, and the only way I was able to have a bowel movement the few days before that was by using a glycerine suppository. Things were coming out in small pieces and kind of....flat and compressed looking. The enema kind of helped, but today I keep having the urge to go and pushing, and nothing is coming out. I'm starting to get scared I have some kind of blockage or something. I'm seeing my OB/gyn on Tuesday so hope to get some more help then. I also introduced prunes into my diet. Do you guys have any other tips? I still have 4 months to go and I can't deal with this the whole time! |
| This seems counterintuitive, but I found that reducing certain fibre from my diet helped ie. I was mixing in extra bran into my yogurt, etc., but still was constipated, despite a more than adequate water intake (I was basically drinking water all.day so it wasn't the issue I wasn't drinking enough to bulk up the fibre). Once I removed "extra" fibre and just enjoyed a regular diet, I fared MUCH better. |

Not sure it's as effective in grownups, but the Gerber brand pear juice works miracles for my dd. Worth a try!
Are you hydrated enough? That alone could be an issue. |
| PlumSmart! It is ike draino for the colon |
| Pp here...tastes much better. Than prune juice |
| Thanks for the tips folks. I haven't added in any extra fiber, and I may not be drinking enough water. I have been doing the standard 8 glass (8 oz per glass) of water per day but I could maybe up it to 10. I will also try the plum smart juice. |

I had bad constipation the second time around, and one ducalex overnight would get things going. (Colace softens, but fucalex moves.)
To be graphic, I sometimes had a foot braced against the wall and one hand putting counter pressure on my, ahem, my taint shall we say, but I did poop. |
| I had bad problems during pregnancy and breastfeeding. I ate 1-2 fiber bars a day. The kind that contain at least nine grams or fiber in it. A carton of that black Dannon Greek yogurt also helps because it has extra fiber as well. I had drink at least eighty ounces of water as well. Doing all of that above is the only thing that helped me. |
| PP here. Add in a squatty potty too. That thing is great. Even a small step stool is worth a try. |
You need to drink 12+ glasses when pregnant, especially if you are constipated! Be sure to spread it out throughout the day... don't chug 3-4 glasses in the afternoon once you realize you're thirsty. Ideally you drink 4-5 glasses before noon. Also try a mug of regular coffee in the morning. I was very constipated and had a somewhat successful enema while on Colace, like you. But I had pain and a sort of constant pressure or urge to go. I did another enema and some milk of magnesia and finally was able to clear myself out. Not that I have somewhat reset, I'm taking a probiotic and taking small amount of Raisin Bran, prune juice, etc b |
| Forgot to add - did you insert the tip of the enema far enough, and lay on your left side? It was super tough for me to insert the enema because my poop was basically right there at the entrance... and it took some gentle force and patience to insert it far enough. Sorry, tmi. Be sure to lay on your left side (has to do with how your intestines are set up, and hold for as long as you can. At least 10 minutes. |
+1. I got a Squatty Potty during the first trimester and it changed my life. I also take a probiotic and psyllium fiber every day in addition to drinking a ton of water. |
Thank you for these tips. I think I may try a second enema tomorrow in hopes of having more success. |
| Warm prune juice. Not hot, just warm. Half a glass every day. |

Increase magnesium. Take supplements or get it through the skin-Epsom salt bath or foot bath. Or use magnesium oil spray or lotion right before bed.
Also, my OB said miralax can sometimes stop things up. Just take the colace. |
