Pregnancy Constipation-Miralax and Colace not working-kind of gross

Anonymous
Fiber gummies worked the best for me. I drank tons of water and Apple juice, colace, miralax etc but things didn't really get better till I added fiber gummies. Good luck! And keep up whatever routine works for the first couple of weeks after the baby until you're fully healed. I stupidly stiffed the gummies and colace etc right after the baby was born. BAD idea.

Hi op,
I've been there. A few things that helped
Citrical with the miralax
Daily probiotic
When all else fails, I found that I could evacuate stools by inserting a finger into my vagina and essentially pushing from the other side. You won't find this delightful maneuver recommended much or anywhere, but it works and eliminates the straining in desperate times.

If you're taking a prenatal with iron, switch to a non-iron formula and focus on dietary iron sources instead (and making sure you're getting that iron in combination with vitamin C, not at the same time as dairy, etc). I got plenty of iron from food and much less constipation that way than with the super-iron-fortified prenatals.

OMG thank you for this!!! I had some fiber gummies around noon and I just had my first bowel movement in 5 days that was unaided by a suppository or enema! I still had some difficulty but I feel like things are on the right track. I have the prune juice I plan to drink in a little while, and as of today I've upped my water intake from 8 glasses to hopefully 12 by the end of the day, so hopefully with all these tips I'll be back in business. Thanks again to everyone for all the tips!

And also to the newly pregnant who might be reading this....even if you normally have no trouble with your bowels, I recommend getting all this stuff (the colace, miralax, fiber, suppositories, enemas etc) to just have around and be proactive at the first sign of getting stopped up. I've never had trouble in this area so I think I was in denial a little. I wish I had started taking something the first day I started having difficulty. And drink your water!!

Congratulations on your new little one!

I second the suggestion to stay really well hydrated and using the squatty potty, But I also want to mention a magnesium supplement that really helps with this and is good for you anyway! It's made by Natural Vitality and it's a powder that you mix with warm water.

I take the one with calcium in the late afternoon and it's a huge help! Of course prune juice, plenty of fruit and veggies are great to, but with the calm I've really only had trouble once during the whole pregnancy. You can find it online.

Start slow, it could definitely cause diarrhea if you take too much, but it's really been a big help to me.

All the best! Drink Plenty of water!!!

Can I take this along with the miralax, colace, etc etc do you think? Also thank you for the tip about the squatty potty! I just moved a little step stool into my bathroom for next time.

Pear Juice is also a miracle. Drink a large glass ( it is sweet) and twenty or so minutes later....satisfaction!

2nd trimester was the worst with this, it got better for me around 30 weeks and has continued to be more regular without any diet changes since then. I stayed on top of colace though, and occasionally skipped a day of iron supplement. Also, a little caffeine can really help-like one mug of tea or something, especially if you normally drink it and aren't currently.

Small coffee in the morning. That's all that would keep things moving for me.

OP here again. Was still struggling, so I brought it up at my most recent doctors appointment. The doctor suggest adding Konsyl (https://www.amazon.com/Konsyl-Fiber-Betic-300g/dp/B016YKUC2A/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483580864&sr=1-1&keywords=konsyl+fiber+betic) to the rest of what I was doing (colace, miralax, more water, fiber gummies) and it has made SO MUCH difference. Seriously, I highly recommend this stuff.
