Do cogat scores come in before deadline?

Anonymous
I know they said to prepare the parent referral packet regardless...but does anyone know if the cogat usually comes in before the deadline?
Anonymous
Yes, usually. I think last year it came the Thurs. a week and a day before the deadline.

Technically yes, but if you need more than a week or so to complete all the paperwork and pull together work samples, outside letters, etc. you will need to just get the file together ahead of time, and then pending the results, use it, or not. That's what our AART suggested, and I'm glad she did because we ended up referring.

Ok this is helpful. I have one rec that hasn't been completed yet and I'm thinking if the scores are high I will let it go and if not I will ask again.

We got our scores the night before the referral package was due. (We had already submitted the referral.)

Complete all the paperwork? Isn't it a one-page form?

I think it's a form, a questionnaire, work samples and letters of rec or awards, if you want to do all of those things. You can do only one page, but it's up to you.

Has anyone received cogat scores yet? Just wondering.

Schools received this email from the AAP office today:

We have had much communication with many AARTs and administrators concerning CogAT scores over the past few days.

We have just received word from the Office of Student Testing that they are able to expedite the 2nd grade CogAT score reports with the testing company so that your school should receive them by Friday. The scores for grades 3-7 will not be available until next Wednesday, January 11th.

Please discuss this update with an administrator so that your front office staff is at the ready to mail pool letters and scores on Friday or Monday when you receive them (given the tight timeline with referrals due on Jan. 13). If you are fielding many parent inquiries, please continue to advise parents not to wait for CogAT scores to put forth a referral if they want their student to be screened for level IV services.

The timeline for this is always tight, which is why we advise parents not to wait for scores in submitting a referral in all communications. Although the Office of Student Testing gets test scores as early as possible, the testing company takes additional time to prepare the score reports that are sent home to parents. All of this happens in a window that ensures our compliance with both the state regulations about test administration and our ability to hold a screening process early enough to provide acceptance for placement numbers to principals in early May to put them in the best position for staffing for the following school year.

Thank you for your patience and your assistance in communicating this information to your administrators, front office staff, and parents.

So will some schools send the scores home in the backpack?

Some do, but they often do so in the Tuesday folder. Many, many mail them though.

Why would FCPS want to encourage all these referrals? Why not just delay the referral deadline for a week or two? It seems like a lot of wasted resources to go through all the extra referrals that likely result from not having the scores back in a reasonable time before the referral deadline.

This is exactly what I was thinking, they're causing needless work and headaches for the staff and parents who have to deal with it.

I actually think some schools are casting as wide a net as possible by delaying scores. If you are at all interested in AAP you are encouraged to refer, and not having the score likely encourages some folks to refer that otherwise would have passed if they knew the score in advance.

I have a note included in my child's folder to attend a "Parents Night" for "AAP Center Based services" available at the local school next week. Do all second grade parents get a note?
