Am I the only person who can't understand why Michael Jackson is freaking EVERYWHERE?

Anonymous
He made some good records when I was in middle school.

Am I missing something?

Yeah, I don't get it either, but it makes for a change from Jon & Kate (have I got that right?).

At least Michael Jackson actually deserved to be famous (unlike Anna Nicole Smith or Jon and Kate).

Agree. Maybe the OP is too young - i find that people in their 40's (me) have a different memory than those younger because he basically defined music in the 80's and it was before he got weird. I found the whole thing really sad.

OP - I am mostly with you. I guess I don't get all the mourning - because my guess is most of these people would have made fun of him a couple of weeks ago. I know MJ has a strong fan base - that's true. But all these praises from other people (legislatures, media, etc) makes me scratch my head.

I liked his music in the 80's - but I thought his life since then was mostly tragic.

Agree with PP. I was in high school when Thriller came out. I think it's a combination of his extraordinary talent, mourning the last stage of childhood (for us!), the fact that he was only 50. the fact that he is leaving three children, the fact that his life was sad in the end, the fact that he was trying to make a comeback before he died. I'm sad about it and find myself preoccupied with it all.

Agree with this. You are missing something by reducing his works and influence on pop culture/music to the sound bite that you have. Sorry.

Oh, good. I thought I was the only one who can't tear herself away. I am also in this PP's exact age group. I have downloaded or bought the CDs of everything solo and much of the Jackson 5 stuff. My kids have become rampant Jackson 5 fans because of my obsessive iPod playing. I guess the only thing that's left is to buy the videos and the inevitable coffee table book.

I don't usually do mass grief, but MJ is different.

Hate all the coverage. PITA. It's similar to what happened when Elvis died, but Elvis never had the ick factor.

Michael Jackson was the most succesful pop musician ever. It's a big deal.

Plus - it's the middle of summer and not much is going on. (Health care? BORING!)

He was HUGE. I LOVED his music, still do.

But he went off the rails. I deeply believe he is a pedophile. His behavior was beyond the pale.

So, what to think? Love the music, hate the man?

I don't know.

But I DO know I am OVER the coverage.

I would have rather tuned in CNN yesterday afternoon and get updates on Iran and China, not bizarre memorial service for a pop star.

Yes, you are missing something...possibly all of those years you've spent under a rock might be part of the reason. Thriller is the best selling album of all time.

I'm 31 and listened to MJ and still enjoy his music. We grew up with music playing in the house all the time and MJ was a constantly playing in our family room (one of the benefits of having really young parents!).

He is probably the most famous person on the entire planet, and people who can't speak or understand an lick of English, can still sing MJ hits all day long. I cannot think of one person more globally recognized than MJ.

His funeral had 50% more TV viewers than Obama's inaguration.

You sound pretty dry and boring.
