And you sound kind of dumb. There's no need to plaster that drivel on every single station out there. Leave news stations for the news. MJ should be relegated to E!, MTV, VH-1, Style, et al. |
Seriously? I think Elvis had a good, strong ick factor. |
| Agree with pp. Elvis was ick. |
Well, consider now the high profile accuser who claimed that MJ molested him, has now come out and said that it never happened. He is claiming that his father pushed him to make up a lie and now says that he will have it on his concience for the rest of his life that he ruined MJ and can never say sorry. I guess I wonder how sorry you are when your family benefited from a 22M pay out. Now to me THAT behavior is beyond pale. |
| You can always turn off the tv and look up what interests you on the net! |
| The coverage is very over the top for my taste, but more than that, I think it seems a little...I don't know, celebrity bandwagon to me. Yes, Michael Jackson was a great musician, but he hasn't had a hit in quite awhile, and I'd venture to guess that many of these people claiming to be devastated fans hadn't thought of him or listened to one of his songs in years. It's sad that he died, especially at such a young age, but it seems more than a little phony for the Today Show, for example, to be falling all over themselves to go on and on about how great he was when they haven't covered him for anything positive in years. Not saying I think they should be speaking ill of the dead, just that I think it's a bit much. |
PP here...I think that people tried to extort him. I also think people also were molested by him and he has paid MILLIONS of hush money out to those people. I will bet you all that hush money that he has molested more, although I hope I am wrong. I hope MJ was just super weird and that is that! |

I really don't believe he molested children. He acted inappropriately and irresponsibly by not realizing the number of people out there who would take advantage of him, but to me, he seemed like he never grew up, like he was asexual, because of his horrible childhood.
I didn't realize the amount of abuse his father put him through. I read he would vomit when his father walked into the room sometimes (when he was a child) and that his father was the one who caused his severe insecurity about his face - telling him his nose was huge all the time. I'm glad they are celebrating him like this - he was a huge philanthropist without being showy about it, and he sold more records than anyone will ever sell (now that record sales are declining because of digital downloads and just the sheer number of musical genres out there that target niche audiences instead of mainstream audiences - unlike an athlete whose record will likely be beat, it's unlikely anyone will ever sell 750 million albums ever again.) I think there will never be a bigger music star just because people get their music in so many different forms now and you can do all this niche marketing. So even the stars who have mass appeal, like Madonna or Justin Timberlake, will not be able to reach this level. He clearly had a connection with people that really can't be described. I wouldn't have even thought to call myself a fan until he died. I'm shocked that I am sad about it! When I first heard about it I was sort of indifferent but in the days since, seeing the footage and hearing the stories, it has sort of hit me. |
He didn't need to continue producing hits because he had already produced a TON of them to last a lifetime. No one can sustain the level that he already had. And I completely disagree that his millions of devastated fans probably hadn't listened to a song of his in years. I don't classify myself as a devastated fan, yet I heard - and loved - his songs here and there all the time still (I listen to a lot of 70s and 80s music on XM and our cable music channel). It's hard to resist tapping your toes - or in my case busting into all out dance moves - when much of his stuff comes on. DH and I would always say, "He's so weird now...but he's so talented!" That all said, I knew his death would be big (I'm the one who put up the post the day he died that TMZ was reporting he was dead before anyone else) but I do agree that I've been surprised at this point at how much it's still being covered. However, I think now it should calm down some. |
Why are the Jon & Kate kids going to be on Charm City Cakes on the Foodnetwork? ARE YOU SERIOUS???? Why? |
i agree and feel like you do. I've been listening to his essentials album all week and what has struck me that is completely lost from our current (and dreadful) pop culture is music was is creative and had a positive message. Everything that is out there now has meaningless hooks and terrible messages. MJ's has gotten me on a Whitney Houston kick and her older music is so positive, just take a good listen to "greatest love of all", that song is all about loving yourself. What i miss is the nostalgia that that music brings back. A time when singing "Man in the Mirror" and "we are the world" was actually cool. Most song sung by BOTH genders right now is just full of misogynist messages and everyone is embracing it. You have to move over to country music to even find popular music that has a positive message. |
No grown man should ever have children, that are not his, sleeping in his bed. This is wrong, and something he didn't seem to realize was wrong, as he admitted to it. It was as if it was OK as long as he wasn't touching them. No, it's not OK. I remember listening to him as a kid, and loving his music. I can see him for the influence he was, however he hasn't had any musical success in what, 20 years? He became so odd, ad as time went on, he just became more and more of a character. He even stopped looking human. He had so many issues and was the fuel for so many tabloid images, for a reason. Then the allegations of molestation were made, and it isn't hard to believe that someone who would hang out with children, and build an amusement park in his backyard, would touch children. Especially since he himself was emotionally stunted, and still very childlike. He was a child in a post pubescent body. I have had enough of the coverage. Let him be, let his children be, and lets get on with the real things in life. Things that really, truly impact out days. |

I'm in my early 40s and I don't get it either. Sure I liked the music in high school but not since then. Who are these 1 billion people tuning into the memorial? Neither DH or I know anyone at work or friends who give one hoot about this. His music is over 20 years old and unlike some other performers has not had the staying power over the decades. Can you honestly say that Thriller or Billie Jean was on your must playlist or even one of your playlists before he died?
Now I never liked Madonna as a performer but you could argue that she has had a bigger influence on pop than MJ. She ushered in the idea of the big brand and was earlier in launching MTV's success. |
| I'm in my late 40's and watched it...twice. And based on facebook updates lots of my friends from high school and college did too. |
| I'm 37 and yes, Billie Jean is on my playlist. It's one of my favorite songs ever. |
