Appeals have be postmarked by May 30th. Rather than collect opinions, why not submit and share FCPS response (back by late June) w the forum. |
It may be that kids with high NNAT but lower CogAT were the ones who didn't get in first round. Kids with lower NNAT and high CogAT may have gotten in first round, and didn't need to appeal as often, because CogAT is given more weight than NNAT. The kids whose parents even bothered to shell out for the WISC may have been the ones who blew the CogAT, which was important, but the parents suspected from the NNAT, teacher comments, their own experiences with their kids, etc., that their kids would be a good fit for AAP. Hence their willingness to invest in the WISC. |
I'm not understanding this either. Deadline is tomorrow so what is everyone asking? Should they appeal? Why not if you feel there is a chance your child would get in and fit well. |
Do you know this to be true or is it speculation/anecdote? I'm 15:19 above whose kid's WISC scores correlated with NNAT more than CogAT. My kid got in first round, no appeal. We did the WISC for other reasons, school never saw it. |
speculation.. has to be- no one on this board has all the files and scores.. |
| I am sending my packet first thing in the morning tomorrow morning, that still works since it will be postmarked 30th, right? |
Yes and good luck |
+1 and would be better if you send by registered mail so to get proof of delivery as well. |
I wouldn't call it speculation but more raising a possibility of why more cases of high NNAT and WISC, and lower CogAT, than cases of low NNAT and higher WISC and CogAT, may be seen on these boards. I don't have any special knowledge beyond what I've read over the years on these boards. If you read all the information over multiple years, CogAT does seem to be weighted higher than NNAT, which makes sense since CogAT is administered over three days and has six sections, whereas NNAT is one short test, more like one of the CogAT six sections. The purpose of NNAT is primarily to detect potential among non-English speakers, again just from what I have read over the years on these boards. I thought I saw this thread veering toward a conclusion that NNAT is more closely correlated with WISC than CogAT is correlated with WISC, so I wanted to raise that the cases seen here don't necessarily support that conclusion. You may have a sample weighted toward those who blew the CogAT, because that was the most important test and low NNAT wasn't as much of a disqualifier leading to the need to appeal. I don't think there's enough evidence to draw a conclusion either way. I do see stats there is around a 0.79 correlation between CogAT and the old WISC III (see example below). I don't immediately pull up correlation numbers for NNAT and WISC so cannot compare. I believe (not a statistician) that the correlation of 0.79 is considered fairly high. http://www.riverpub.com/products/group/cogat6/pdfs/newsletters/CS_vol1_summer04.pdf |
Have just gotten back DD's GBRS from her private school. It is 11 (3 threes and 1 two). I am trying to gather her file while preparing our move. Is her GBRS good enough for the AAP ? |
Are you planning on applying for the 2014? If so, deadline was in January to apply and May 30 to appeal. If you are collecting information for 2015 academic year, I guess you are fine. WISC & GBRS are decent. If u r moving from private school FFx will administer CoGat test in October and you can take that to apply in 2015 Jan. GL! |
When I call the AAP office, I was told to submit the parent referral package during summer and they will make a decision before school starts in Sep 2014. I plan to submit the package around July 15 which is our move date. I hope this is not too late. |
|
Have just called the AAP office and confirmed that I can submit the referral package after we move and their will consider DD eligibility for Sep 2014 in a couple week after they receive the full package. |
|
They pretty much disregard GBRS from private schools. Meaningless.
