Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
I don’t think it would have mattered because Stewart seemed like she wanted to unseat Evans. |
| Stewart seems to frighten the regressives. I was undecided before but now she's definitely got my vote!! |
LOL. You seem so determined to beat on Stewart. Why don't you check the public records or contact Stewart to get the information you want? Otherwise, you have made your point dissing Stewart on DCUM. |
I mean, *I* want to unseat Evans, but that's because I think she hasn't done a good job. Maybe Stewart thought the same. In any case, pretty much anyone living within the D4 bounds could run either for D4 or for at-large. Stewart filed for D4, probably because it was likely that there would be less opposition. Evans had a week to consider in which race she'd run, if she wanted to keep a seat at the table, and she decided to run against Mandel and Stewart instead of against Harris and a host of others (being the incumbent D4 member doesn't mean she needed to run there). Harris also would have qualified to run for D4, but I think she filed for a repeat of that at large seat when it was only the 2 right-leaning candidates who had filed much earlier. I also think she filed after Stewart, so it would make sense that she file for that at-large seat if she wanted to ensure there wasn't a race with only right-leaning camdidates. Though, again, I'd prefer her not to have run at all, Evans' choice makes sense. It could be because she wouldn't have to battle another well-known incumbent in Harris or against the relative bevy of others who had filed for that seat. Or it could be because she'd only have to run against Stewart, knowing that if she could keep Stewart's vote count down in the primary, she'd easily beat Mandel in the general. Or both. Stewart's choice was even more obvious. Nobody had filed for the D4 seat when she submitted. Harris hadn't filed, but had clearly indicated she would. Evans hadn't yet confirmed she was going to file. I'm pretty sure from years of hearing their interests from their MCCPTA involvement that Stewart and Harris align, especially on data transparency from MCPS, while Evans hasn't seemed to be too concerned about that from her time on the board and may not be as well aligned to Stewart's interests. (All are on the left, of course, but in different ways.) |
| That’s a lot of words to say she was definitely running against Evans but not Harris. There must be a big difference between the two but I can’t quite put my finger on it. |
Sure. Evans has been there eight years and does nothing but agree with central office staff. Time for her to go. |

Rolling Stone has taken notice of the Bethany Mandel campaign:

This is just click-bait. She's not running as a Democrat. It's a nonpartisan race. She's registered as a Democrat because in this county it's the only way to have an impact on the primary race. I wish MD had open primaries. Signed, Stewart supporter |
She literally tweeted her and her husband registered as democrats strictly for primaries. She’s psychotic. Anyone promoting her (Mcps fan favs: reesman and smelkinson) are as well. |
Is there any risk that Evans and Stewart split the vote as the MCPS insiders and let Mandel move to the general election by coming in 2nd? |
| No, she is so far to the right with that she will only attract a few fringy votes |
It's definitely possible, in my opinion. I do not think there's much risk that she would win the general election, though. |
Someone should let Stewart it’s a nonpartisan race. Signed, A Democrat who voted for Jawando and Mink |
When one of your opponents is Bethany Mandel, I don't think it's possible to campaign without mentioning partisan political issues. |
