Yes, progressives would not be able to tell Muslims that banning LGBTQ books is bigoted the same way they do to Christians. What they can do is white savior them from "joining in white supremacist views" which immediately discounts their views on a subject.

That's silly. I don't consider myself a progressive, but I'm perfectly comfortable telling ANYBODY that banning books with LGBTQ characters is bigoted.

The MoCo CAIR families get to make their own decisions about whom to ally with. I, personally, think it was a bad decision to ally with the astroturf book-banners, and if anybody had asked me, I would have said so, but nobody asked me.

I didn't hear Mink directing her comments at CAIR. The exact words she used were "some Muslim families".

CAIR = Council on American-Islamic Relations

Yes, I know. Did you know CAIR does not mean the same thing as "some Muslim families"? One is a specific organization, the other can be inclusive of nearly 2 billion people.

Oh good grief. "Some Muslim families" does not mean "every Muslim in the world". Similarly, when I refer to "the Muslim people at the protest that happened before the BoE meeting," I am also not referring to every Muslim in the world.

Have you asked any Montgomery County residents who are LGBTQ+ and Muslim how they feel about this?

Oh good grief. She referred to a group solely by their religion. Not any institutional affiliation (eg CAIR). Their religion. Yes it does include nearly 2 billion people.

If I say, "There are some Muslim families at my child's school" (actually there are many Muslim families at my child's school), that doesn't mean there are 2 billion people at my child's school.

Obviously not. But that's not what Kristin Mink said, so it's irrelevant.

Why does Mink get a pass on this? What she said was clearly offensive to many.

She has a history of labeling people, which (at best) is simply poor speaking and (at worst) shows her character.

Religion is no excuse for bigotry. This isn’t the 19th century.

Apparently now there were tweets (now deleted), using the word "Zionist" which isnt even thinly veiled Anti-semitism.

The council not saying a peep about this is telling, but man- this is now 3 legit embarassments for them in a few months, from one council member.

I’m sure there are screenshots out there. He might have to hunt for them, but nothing is deleted on the Internet.

I haven't seen any screenshots- but she did (another) apology last night.

The point is- the council can't have one member stepping on a rake every few weeks/months. It makes the entire council look like a joke.

I don't think she will be censured, or the council will make any public statements- but I imagine she is getting some behind the scenes talking to to just be quiet and do her actual job.

Evan Glass expressed to reporters his "profound disappointment" with Mink's comments.

Goes to show how important it is to elevate the voices of the people who you are purporting to support, rather than using them to elevate yourself. She put Glass in an incredibly difficult position as her comments were undoubtedly going to be associated with him as the only gay Councilmember and the current Council President.

For Godsakes, stop with this.

If you think her comments about the Islamic parents, or her comments about "Zionists" are a non-issue- you are either telling on yourself personally, or you are so blinded by team politics that you can't see an objective problem here.

I'm embarrassed as a Blair Magnet alum.

The thing is- she'll do it again.

Either she doesnt think she has done anything wrong in the first place, or those close to her are encouraging these kind of statements and activism instead of the hard work of county governance.

If the other members of the council don't see that- I dont know what to tell them.
