| Anyone get updates on waitlist movement at HM or Riverdale? |
Will schools let you know when waitlists close? New to this and we are on a couple. |
Anything can happen between now and September. People move away, etc. I would let them know you have continued interest (if that is the case). |
| Brearley says their list is through June. |
|
My experience in getting off waitlists at both Riverdale and a top all girls school is that it usually happens the week leading to the acceptance deadline. There is also one or two spots that usually open up late June or over the summer.
Express your strong interest in your top school noting the reasons why your family is a good fit. Just be respectful of admissions time and don’t be overly zealous. |

has anyone heard any wait list movement info?
|
It’s been crickets |
Definitely deepens on who you are and what you consider top school. Similarly to DC where some think Sidwell is the top and others would never apply there and think St. Albans is the top and vice versa. Some schools appeal to preppy more conservative types and others to more liberal progressive types - more diverse schools etc... Curious to hear what people think are the top schools and what their perceived stereotypes are. |

Top schools are
Trinity Horace Mann Riverdale Brearley Dalton Chapin Collegiate Spence St. Ann Regis All are K-12 save Regis |
I'd argue Saint Bernard's (K-8) is widely believed to be better than a few of these schools. I also think Riverdale gets a lot of prestige from its high school, and for the K-8 years, there are a couple more UES boys' schools that are on par. |
Is the reason that St. Bernard’s not on this list because it doesn’t have high school? Wondering how top tier schools are generally defined in this sub! What are the examples of the boys’ schools that are on par with Riverdale for K-8? |
Yes, it's because it doesn't have a high school. Schools that send large numbers of graduates to ivy league colleges are often mentioned as top schools. Saint Bernard's boys graduate to high school, not college. They do eventually go to college, though, and if you could somehow compare boys starting at K at Saint Bernard's to boys starting at K at these other schools, Saint B's would look quite good. I'd suggest that Saint David's and Buckley are at least as good as Riverdale for K-8. Riverdale has the stronger brand because of it's college placements... but it doubles in size by high school by admitting proven high performers at higher grades. Multiple parents have told me that their kids started at the top of the class and ended up middle/bottom because of this. It's hard to get in at high school, and many people want to secure their spots by entering in Kindergarten. That's fine; it depends on what you value. The actual K-8 education, though, is at least as good, if not better, at the UES boys' schools. |
| St. Bernard’s had that article in the Times a few years ago about the rancor between the board and the parents over the ousting of the headmaster. Have things calmed down since? |
I've heard great things about the new headmaster though it is admittedly 2nd/3rd hand. |
| People on this board seem to love St. B's, and the new head of school seemed great, but we felt it was a bit chilly and also sensed it was still recovering (financially and overall) from the scandal some years ago. |
